John “Old” Bassett Two full sets of parents

William Owen "Bill" Irwin Angus & I have been cleaning up Bassett’s.

A word of caution on FindAGrave for origins of “early arrivers.” Their info for John “Old” Bassett was not entirely supportable. Look for Citations from reputable sources in their entries, otherwise it’s just a reference.

Don’t trust “any” site including Geni for first arrivers unless there are good notes in the profile to go by.

If there are not, request a sourcing / Biography effort. Maybe start a discussion in this project “Need help merging Colonial Americans” dedicated to that.

Yeah, family search is totally wrong.

To be specific, Family Search family trees are no better than anyone else's, for all the usual reasons. Their Records section is usually pretty reliable, though, as they draw from primary sources (and often have images of the original documents, besides).

The closer to “now” the more accurate the sites.

I hope I was clear that FamilySearch (and FindaGrave) had errors in this ‘
“specific” case. There are thousands, probably millions, of cases where they are spot on, and very helpful.

What I think happens in FS is the records are attached but misunderstood: “here’s John Smith, must be this one !”

Just as a follow up - it’s too bad FS got the wife mixed up with the wife of a different Robert Bassett, because this one is particularly interesting:

“Goody” Mary Bassett

Lieutenant Philip Smith, Deacon of Hadley is an MP profile with some locked fields.

Cicely Davis (Thayer) has 2 full sets of parents.

https://www.geni.com/merge/view?revision_id=72701023040 is one possible merge that caused this. There are several merges in late April 2016 as well.

Good job folks. I'm scarce due to personal commitments and a major relocation, but I hope to help Erica out here eventually.

By the way ... when I find FamilySearch relationships are screwy, I "clean them up" as best I can (from the records) before I then clean up the Geni profiles (and lock as may be needed).

Cleaning up FamilySearch minimizes someone "blindly" copying garbage back into Geni.

Yes, someone can come along and re-"mess up" the FamilySearch connections (since they don't have "Curators & Locking" as yet), but (so far) I've not encountered that as a problem when there are even a smidgeon of supporting records.

Deacon Richard Butler has data conflicts but the fields are locked.
