It just takes a few seconds to critically look at the differences/similarities on the merge screen - Different parents, different spouses, different countries of birth are a pretty good indication that they aren't the same person.

Private User - In doing a cursory look-through of the children for Cpt. James Adams at least one child - Reuben Adams - does look to be his (Massachusetts vs Pennsylvania).

Regarding James Black Adams' children being born in both Pennsylvania & West Virginia, they share a border. (Similar to New South Wales and Queensland, though not as neat.)

re: multiple parents of Charlotte & Lewis:
After taking a look at the merges, I disconnected the least likely parent; resulting matches seem to confirm the current parents fairly well.

Re: John ‘the Settler’ Stiles shows as father to Robert Stiles, of Rowley although no sources seem to connect them. John ‘the Settler’ Stiles is one of my 9th ggrandparents and I was trying to see if there was a connection between my line for John the settler and Ezra Stiles' line. Seems like there is an error somewhere in here. Shouldn't Robert be disconnected as a son?

You are correct, there's no known connection between families. Robert Stiles, of Rowley has been detached, and relationships locked. I cleaned up his children's profiles also, and added a probable 2nd wife Elizabeth Stiles if anyone wants to follow up on that.
