Benjamin Asher

According to the late 1950's tombstone transcriptions Benjamin Asher died 16 August 1863 aged 63 years. The New Zealander of 17\8\1863 has Rayner Asher died 16 August 1863 aged 65 years, wife of Benjamin Asher. Source: http://www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/dbtw-wpd/exec/dbtwpub.dll

NOTE: Benjamin likely returned home to England and the mix up in dates likely relates to his wife Rayner as it is unlikely that husband and wife both died on the same day unless an accident was involved.

Benjamin Asher and family paid their own passage to New Zealand, arriving on board the Martaban on 8 October 1856. On 22 March 1860 he applied for a free grant of 100 acres. He would live in New Zealand for nine years. He returned home to England in 1866 and died in London Hospital on 19 June 1866.

Synagogue scribes website has records for Benjamin's daughter Rebecca who married Emanuel Davis show Benjamin's Hebrew name of Zeev and on Benjamin Zeev's marriage record to Rachel (in 1841 census Rayner is Rachel) Mendoza it shows his father as Meir Asher and Rayner's father as Jacob Mendoza. Meir Asher was married to Judith Abrahams but it is possible Hannah Hart (possibly Menze/Mendoza) bought some of them up as Rebecca and Hannah Asher are with her in 1841
