About Jeffrey Mumford
Margaret Butler's TAYLOR-MUMFORD-HOLLAND FAMILY HISTORY, 1993-1999: In 1820 a group of Huguenots and French royalists arrived in Alabama from North Carolina. The U.S. Government had given them five town sites on which to settle. These were Augauga, Vernon, Selma, Demopolis and Clayton, which is now the county seat of Barbour County. These religious and political refugees were unused to the hard life of pioneers and many sickened and died. Others established new residences where there were large numbers of French such as Mobile and cities in Louisiana and Florida. Among these people were the Mumfords, Taylors, DeJarnettes (...married a Mumford), Buyckes, Speigners, DeBardelebons and Hollands. (Department of Archives and History, State of Alabama.)
Jeffrey was listed as "Jeffrey Mumford" on the 1800 Halifax Co., NC federal census. Brothers, Wiiliam and Thomas, as well as father, Richard, were also listed nearby, however, their last name was spelled "Montfort."
Census: 1830, FL, Jackson Co. Mumford, Jeffery Mumford, Taylor
