Josel of Rosheim

"Josel of Rosheim (alternatively: Joselin, Joselmann, Yoselmann, German: Josel von Rosheim, Hebrew: יוסף בן גרשון מרוסהים‎ Joseph ben Gershon mi-Rosheim, or Joseph ben Gershon Loanz; c. 1480 – March, 1554) was the great advocate ("shtadlan") of the German and Polish Jews during the reigns of the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I and Charles V. Maximilian I appointed him as governor of all Jews of Germany, a position which was confirmed after his death by his grandson, Charles V.

His stature among the Jews, and the protected status he gained for himself and for the Jews within the Holy Roman Empire, rested in part on his skills as an advocate and in part from the Jewish role in financing the expenses of the emperor. Josel of Rosheim remains a major figure of the History of Jews in Alsace."

Their son was the famous Rabbi Joschmann (Joselin) of Rosheim. Born in Mittelbergheim (Alsace) in 1477, he died March 1554, probably at Rosheim, but his true burial place is unknown.

Josel was the advocate of all the Jews in the German Empire and appeared as the Representant (sic) of Jewish interests in his capacity of an Imperial agent.

R. Josel Rosheim and his wife Sara were the parents of R. Mosche Loans Aschkenasi, a talmudist

in Frankfort a/Main. He was the father of R. Elijahu “Baal Schem”, 24 March 1555 in

Frankfurt – 24 July 1636 in Worms. On his mother’s side he was the grandson of R.

Johanau Luria. R. Elijahu “Baal Schem“ married Blumelin, the daughter of R. Zangwill

of Worms. From 1600 to 1612 Elijahu was Rabbi of Fulda and then he became Rabbi of

Hanau. In 1629 he moved to Worms, where Blumelin died on 6 November 1630, the
