About Kenneth Henry James Mountford
Kenneth Henry James Mountford was one of nineteen men were killed when an explosion ripped through the state-run Strongman coal mine at Rūnanga, on the West Coast of the South Island, just after 10am on 19 January 1967.
Ken was also a rugby league player who represented New Zealand. His brothers Ces Mountford and Bill Mountford also played. Ken played for Blackball during the 1940s along with his two brothers. Blackball held the Thacker Shield at the time. He represented both the West Coast and the South Island.
