Lewis Bryan, I

Lewis Bryan came to Bertie Co in 1713. He was the son of John Bryan of Nansemond Co. VA.

Lewis came to Bertie County, North Carolina from Surry County, Virginia in 1713 with his wife Elizabeth Hunter. On 15 October 1715, in Chowan County Court (Chowan Deed Book B #1), "Lewis Bryan proved rights for ye importation of (children) Symon, William, Edward, Janett, Lewis, Elizabeth, Mary, Joanah, Sarah, and Anne Bryan, and (grandchildren) Lewis Bryan Jr., Elizabeth Byran (Whitmell) Jr.

Lewis Bryan, born circa 1660, died before 1740 (see 'below deeds of sons), married ca. 1683 Elizabeth, whom tradition states was Elizabeth Hunter, of Surry County, Virginia; but who might have been Elizabeth Symon (Simon or Symons). There were both a Symon and Symons in the early records of northeast North Carolina. More research might bring proof of her name.

1688: Lewis Bryan stands indebted to Henry Gay [note elsewhere that a granddaughter of John Bryan, Sr. (II.) married Richard Gay] of Isle of Wight Co. Va,, February 1688 ... Henry Gay should not molest Lewis Bryan in possession of land adjoining land of John Bryan Sr. , May 1, 1689. " (From Bodie's" 17th Century Isle of Wight p. 691.)

1711: In 1711, Lewis Bryan brought seven children born from ca.1681 to 1711 into North Carolina therefore, he was too old a man to have been the son of Edward Bryan, who was married about 1685, so the only inference to be drawn is that **Lewis Bryan was son of John Sr. and brother of Edward Bryan [b 1663].**

1715: "At a Court held in Chowan Precinct on Sept. 18, 1715, Lewis Bryan proved his right for importation of Symon, William, Edward, Janette, Lewis, Elizabeth, Mary, Joanah (Susannah?), Sarah & Anne Bryan, Lewis Jr. and Elizabeth Bryan, Jr. (N. C. Superior Court Records). Son Joseph (see will of William) was probably too young to count. Mary and Joannah [Susannah] are probably the daughters of Edward and Christine Bryan and were the only members of Edward's family coming into North Carolina at that time, their Uncle Lewis was asked to include them in the list with his own family. This stems from the fact that Mary Bryan Bush named a son Hardy Bush and down through the generations there have been innumerable descendants named Edward Bryan Bush, Council Bush and an occasional Hardy Bush but never a Lewis Bush. Also Joannah [Susanah] Franck named her first son Edward. [Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol. I,]

Part of a person's right to remain in a certain place was that he had resided there for several years previous. Hence we might assume that the Lewis Bryan who proved the above rights in I715 moved into Chowan Precinct, North Carolina, about 1711 .

1719: Bk. 8, p 180 In the Office of the Secretary of State, Raleigh, is the record of a grant, No. 780, in Chowan County to Lewis Bryan for 300 acres, issued I March 1719 on North Side of Sandy Run. In it is mentioned the corner of William Gray's.

1740: Deed Bk. F. p265 "This indenture [sic] made the fourteenth Day of November 1740 between Lewis Bryan of Craven County and Edward Bryan of Bertie" for 57 pds 4 sh. paid by Edward Bryan.. part of a tract of land lying and being in Bertie County on the west side of Chowan river .. part of land where John Hand now lives and where Edward Bryan now lives "containing 300 An which was left to sd Lewis Bryan by the will of his father" http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=7213&id=I...

1741: Simon Bryan made a deed in 1741 which proves that his father was Lewis and that Lewis left a will (Bertie Co., N.C. D,B, F, p. 297; and on p 265 Bertie Co. is a deed proving Lewis of Craven County, N.C. to have been a son of Lewis and brother of Simon. William was mentioned second in the list. D. B. D, p.193 and D.B. F, p 322 prove that William Bryan of Pasquotank Co., N.C. , was son of Lewis. The daughter Elizabeth was born Sept. 15, 1694. Thus we see that Lewis Bryan died before 1740. His will was possibly never recorded.

1745: Craven Co., NC Bryan Deed Abstracts 1742-1786 Deed book 3, pg 212 Dated 17 Mar 1745-46 "Lewis Bryan son of John Bryan, deceased" sells "390 acres of which my father held by deed from John Simmons, on North side of Neuse River. . .." Wit. Lewis Bryan, Sen.

1754: In 1754, Jacob Miller bought land on Maul's Run, "where Lewis Bryan lived, "granted to Lewis Bryan Nov. 23, 1739."(Craven D.B 20. p 106). Joseph Bryan (son of Lewis Bryan was captain of the company of militia drawn from Maul's Run to county line. (Vol. 20, p 320).
