Louisa Jane Montagu Douglas Scott, Duchess of Buccleuch and Queensberry VA (26 August 1836 – 16 March 1912) was the daughter of James Hamilton, 1st Duke of Abercorn. In 1884, she became the Duchess of Buccleuch and Duchess of Queensberry, the wife of William Henry Walter Montagu Douglas Scott, 6th Duke of Buccleuch and 8th Duke of Queensberry. She was the paternal grandmother of Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, and of Marian Louisa, Lady Elmhirst, as well as a maternal great-grandmother of Prince William of Gloucester and Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester, and a great-great-grandmother of Sarah, Duchess of York.
Early Life, Marriage, & Family
Lady Louisa Jane Hamilton was born on Friday 26 August 1836 at Brighton, Sussex, England[1], the third child of fourteen born to His Grace Sir James Hamilton, 1st Duke of Abercorn and Lady Louisa Jane Russell, daughter of Sir John Russell, 6th Duke of Bedford[2].
She married William Henry Walter Montagu Douglas Scott, Earl of Dalkeith on Tuesday 22 November 1859 at London, England, the eldest son of the Sir Walter Francis Montagu Douglas Scott, 5th Duke of Buccleuch & 7th Duke of Queensberry and his wife Lady Charlotte Thynne.[2] Sir William and Lady Louisa had six sons and two daughters:

As well as fulfilling her duties as Duchess of Buccleuch and Queensberry, Lady Louisa served as Mistress of the Robes to Queen Victoria from 1885 – 1892 (Conservative), and again from 1895 – 1901.[2] She was appointed Mistress of the Robes to Queen Alexandra in 1901 (Conservative), a position in which she served until her death in 1912.[2]

Her Grace, Lady Louisa Jane Montagu Douglas Scott, 6th Duchess of Buccleuch & 8th Duchess of Queensberry, VA (3rd Class) died on Saturday 16 March 1912, in her 76th year, at Dalkeith Palace, Midlothian, Scotland. She was survived by her husband, and six of her children and their families.
She was buried on Wednesday 20 March 1912 in the Buccleuch family crypt in St. Mary's Church, Dalkeith Palace, Midlothian, Scotland.[1]
