Tracing the Fantasy of "Mark Roger Hilton"
According to PlymouthAncestors.org, the father of the New England immigrants William and Edward Hilton was a man named, William Hilton of Northwich, Cheshire.[12] He was not "Mark Roger Hilton" as seen on Findagrave (as well as some FamilySearch pedigree resource files, other websites and blogs), as a man from Biddick, DUR ... which conflates him with William Hilton, Esq., of Biddick, who married Margaret Metcalfe. Mark Roger has also been erroneously called the husband of Sybil Lumley, making him a fantasy father of William Hilton, esq. of Biddick.[13]
It appears that Mark Roger is a twist on the bogus Roger, invented in the late 19th century, as noted above.

Captain Roger Hilton was born between 1550 and 1560 in Biddick, Durham, England. And, while many genealogies mentioned Yorkshire, or Northwich, Cheshire, as his birthplace, it would seem logical that he was born in Biddick, Durham since his father was Lord Biddick of Hylton Castle. He was the son of William Hilton of Biddick and Margaret Metcalfe.
His wife's name in unknown. Captain Roger Hilton may have married Ellen Mainwarring, daughter of John Mainwarring, circa 1585 in Wearmouth, Durham, England,, with no firm citations for this wife/marriage, but her name has appeared on numerous genealogy databases. The marriage date is based upon the estimated birthdate of Roger and 1590s birthdates of his sons. Captain Roger Hilton died in 1604/5 in Wearmouth, Durham, England. Other souses cite his wife's name as Rebecca probably based on the name of his daughter of the same name. [SIC: no evidence supporting a daughter Rebecca]
Roger is included in the published family pedigree (see Surtees' "History of Durham"), as well as mentioned in his mother's Will of 1566.1
While I have found Roger being referred to in many genealogy databases as "Mark" Roger Hilton, since there have never been any accompanying sources cited, I will refer to him as only "Roger."
Roger, being the fourth son, had to set out to earn his own living. He became a London merchant where he was been shown to be living in 1590.2

• ID: I01696 • Name: Roger Hilton • Sex: M • Birth: BET 1550 AND 1560 in Biddick, Durham, England • Death: 1604 in Wearmouth, Durham, England • Note: Roger Hilton has not been proven (with sources) to be the father of William and Edward Hilton. I'm not even sure that William and Edward were brothers as stated in many Hilton biographies. William wrote a letter to a cousin in England after arriving in America, I have not seen in any documentation as to whom he addressed it although many of the same sites say it is to his cousin Edward. Did he have a brother AND a cousin Edwar As per The 'Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and NH' (ref 4, p 331), "This woman, identity unknown, in order to connect the Durham County family with the two brothers in London and America, must have invented probate records of two estates, ‘Ralph Hilton, 1602’ and ‘Roger Hilton 1619’ [since later] exhaustive searches …failed to find any trace of ‘Ralph’ and ‘Roger’. They did, however, find over thirty contemporary records supporting the origin of the American emigrant brothers in Northwich, Chester County. [Nonetheless], the baronial pedigree was published in the Yarmouth Herald, Mar. 22-29, Apr 5-12, 1898, and will doubtless charm the credulous for years to come." I found this is SOOOO condescending that I have been trying to find the ancestry of William Hilton for myself. I have not found any of the "over thirty contemporary records supporting the origin of the American emigrant brothers in Northwich, Chester County" and "This woman, identity unknown" is hardly a source I'd base my tree on. I have not found definitive evidence of a link to the Hiltons of Monwearmouth either. I have been trying to limit my sources to those written before 1898, but I've also included some current interesting references. I find it hard to believe that the strong British class system was abandoned as soon as the immigrants arrived in America. Both William and Edward Hilton's children and grandchildren married into leading New England families. Many of the immigrants were from upper class English families although this hasn't been always apparent when I research them (Nowell, Winthrop, Saltonstall, Pelham, Nelson, Hutchinson, Dudley, Abell, Davenport, Throckmorton, Wentworth, Lawrence, Livingston, Cadwalader, Chilton to name just a few).

Richard de Hulton had four sons, Richard, his heir, Adam, John, and Roger. Roger Hulton, a grandson of the Adam last-named, married Agnes, daughter of Robert Legh, the head of the chivalrous House of Adlington, in Cheshire, and by her had, with other issue, a son William, who married Elizabeth, daughter of Richard Radcliffe, of The Tower, and held tenements in Ince and Wigan. He held the office of escheator for Henry IV., in the county of Oxford, and was named collector of the dowry of Blanche, the King's eldest daughter. Though little is known of him, we are able to get a side glance of his martial character in the evidence submitted in the court of the Lord Marshal of England in that mighty contest that agitated the kingdom in the reign of Richard II., and which was waged with as much b1tterness as the contest between the pr1ncely Scaligers of Verona — the Scrope and Grosvenor case.
