Arthur attended Mount Eden Primary School, followed by Auckland Grammar School. He left New Zealand in 1911 and worked at Belfast in Northern Ireland. In September 1914 he travelled to London and enlisted in the British Expeditionary Force, serving during World War I with the Grenadier Guards, 3rd Battalion. In October 1915, the battalion were on the Western Front, holding the newly won German fortification known as the Hohenzollern Redoubt at Auchy-les-Mines in France.
