1. Simon HOYT (1595-1657) d. Stamford, CT (My Genealogies/My Genealogies) Simon HOYT (1595-1657) was born in England and died in Stamford, Connecticut. Some of his descendants later changed the name to HAIGHT. By Richard Hillenbrand - Upstate New York Genealogy -

First Generation 1. Simon HOYT was born circa 1595 in Curry Rivel, Somersetshire, England and died on 1 SEP 1657 in Stamford, CT.

The reasoning about Simon Hoyt's birth in Curry Rivel is the Hoyt family showed activity there until 1599 when the activity moved to West Hatch. Also, Michael Hoyt gave Simon some land in 1617, which would be consistent with him coming of age and also because his GF was pregnant.

Simon's first son Christopher died in 1618, not 1617 as the original record cycles twice between the 1617 date and the 1619 date. This means he died after they were married, not before.

In the Haight family history, some records indicate Michael Hoyte living in Curry Rivel prior to about 1600, making this as a possible birth location for Simon Hoyt. Also, the same records indicate Simon married Susanna prior to departing for the American Colonies.

Simon Hoyt (c1595-1657), son of Michael Hoyt of West Hatch, Somerset, England, married on 11/4/1617 in Marshwood, Dorset, England to Jone Stoodlie (2/8/1596-c1630), daughter of John and possibly Dorothie Stoodley, and baptized in Marshwood. He survived Jone and married Susannah, her parents unknown, 2nd.

Groom: Simon Hoyt... Bride: Jone Stoodley... County: Dorset... Parish: Marshwood... Date: 4th November 1617... Year: 1617... Parish Records Marriages

Simon came to America aboard the Lions Whelp.[Unproven] He landed at Salem in 1628 or 1629, and shortly afterward went to Charlestown, Mass. to live, as one of the first settlers.

  • 1. Christopher (c1616-8/22/1618) baptized in West Hatch (out of wedlock)
  • 2. Walter 11/30/1618
  • 3. Nicholas 5/7/1620
  • 4. Alexander 12/2/1623
  • 5. Agnes 10/8/1626
  • 6. John baptized in Broadwindsor 12/25/1628.

The Simon Hoyte of Upwey (1590-?) is found at:

Simon Hoyte, of Upwey

He married Deborah Stowers, (1593-?) and remained in England. Their son John (1614-1688) died in Amesbury Massachusetts, possibly Thomas in Connecticut. [This is most likely a fabrication]

Jone must have died just before or just after the family emigrated to New England, because Simon Hoyt married 2nd before 1635, possibly about 1630, probably in Massachusetts, to Susannah, her parents unknown. The grave of Jone Hoyt in Charleston is an estimate and not supported by documentation.

At the time of her death, before 1 Feb 1674 in Stamford, Connecticut, she was Susannah Bates, probably the wife of Robert Bates of Stamford.

Children of Susannah and Simon Hoyt: (Except Benjamin, birth order and dates are estimates.)

  • Moses, b. ca. 1632 (Dorchester?), m. Elizabeth
