Sir William Mallory, Lord of Papworth

Sir William Mallory (c.1386-1445), of Papworth St. Agnes, Cambs., 2nd s. of Sir Anketin Mallory (d.1393), of Kirkby Mallory, Leics. by Alice (d.1412), da. and h. of John Dryby of Breedon-on-the-Hill, Leics. and wid. of Ralph, Lord Basset (d.1378) of Sapcote. He, who m. (1) 1420/1, Margaret (d.1439), wid. of Robert Corbet* of Moreton Corbet, Salop, by whom he had a son, Thomas, and (2) Margery, inherited Shelton, Beds., and Papworth from his kinsman, Sir William Papworth*. He was well connected in the Midlands, being brother-in-law of Sir Robert Moton† of Peckleton and of Sir John Bagot* of Blithfield, Staffs. and half-brother to Elizabeth, Lady Grey of Codnor.

Previous Mallory representative was William Mallory of Walton-on-the Wolds, 1419.

In 1391 [Sir William] Papworth, no doubt aware that he was now unlikely to father another child (his son by his first wife had died more than 30 years earlier), made an entail of Papworth St. Agnes, providing that the manor should pass after the deaths of himself and his wife to a distant[?] kinsman (Sir) William (c.1386-1445), the second son of Sir Anketin Mallory of Kirkby Mallory, Leicestershire. This arrangement was confirmed in 1408, by which date the trustees of the property included the Rutland lawyer and future Speaker, Roger Flore*. Mallory was also to inherit the manor of Shelton in Bedfordshire, which Sir William had recently acquired.

According to Hikaru Kitabayashi, Sir William Mallory was actually married *three* times (though *never* to Jane Plumpton!):

William’s history, being covered by me in depth elsewhere, will not be covered here. Suffice it to say that he was born in 1386 and died in 1445. He married twice, firstly in around 1408 to a woman whose name has not yet been identified and secondly to Margaret a presumed daughter of John Burley of Shropshire and the wife of Robert Corbet, the lord of the manor of Corbet Moreton. His second wife died in 1439. He married a third time to a woman by the name of Margery who survived him. By his first wife, he seems to have had a daughter Margaret who was the first wife of Thomas Palmer of Leicestershire. By his second wife Margaret Burley he had a son Thomas who inherited Papworth St. Agnes and possibly a second son Robert who, in the first years of the reign of Edward IV was the Lieutenant of the Constable of the Tower of London. He also had a daughter Anne whose age is impossible to judge and who could have been a daughter of any of his three wives. He was knighted relatively early in life and twice served in the French wars.
