Thomas Starnes was the sixth born son of Frederick Starnes & Mary Goldman. Thomas was born ca. 1734 in New York and died ca. 1818 in Tennessee. Like his other brothers and sister, Thomas followed the family each time they moved. He also traveled with the family when they left New York and migrated south into Pennsylvania and settled down on the Juanita River in 1741. Then again, Thomas packed up his family and moved with the family into the New River area of Virginia from circa 1744 to 1769.

Finally he would settle down on the Holston River. By Order of Council December 16, 1773 and being a part of the Loyal Company Grant surveyed for: "Thomas Stern (Thomas Starnes), 91 acres in Fincastle County on a brand of Lick Run on the middle fork of Holston's River~June 2, 1774."
