William Head I, of Calvert

William Head, of Calvert County, MD, died in circa 1698. He married Ann (some think she was a Kendall), and they had a son William. If there were other children, their names are not known. After the death of William Head, Ann married secondly by 1702, Col. John Bigger, and following his death, married thirdly, 1715, Patrick Andrews.

I have arbitrarily begun this section with an item dated 1675 because of the later association between the Bigger family and William Head (both father and son of this name), and have tentatively concluded that William Head in Calvert County fl. 1675 was, in fact, the same man whose widow married Col. John Bigger. For purposes of identification, I have designated him "William Head I". It is possible that William Head of the Western Shore was William Head of Calvert County.

Another problem presents itself. The few items concerning William Head of Calvert County during 1694-1697 do not indicate if they refer to William I or to his son William II.

1. William Head I, died circa 1698, Calvert County, MD; married Ann (Kendall?), died 1727. She married secondly by 1702 Col. John Bigger, thirdly in 1715 Patrick Andrew.

2. William Head II, died 1719, Prince George's County, MD; married Mrs. Ann Bigger Gibson, died after 1727/8. She married thirdly by 1726 Weldon Jefferson.

Rumsey married by 1677 Ann, widow of John Bigger of Patuxent River, Calvert County, who died 1675/6. They were the parents of Col. John Bigger. Kent Island records show Henry Norman as both a plaintiff and defendant in 1669/70.

The same day, Keene asked William Head to pay the order which Head refused to do. As of the hearing date in 1696, William Head had not paid the note nor satisified it in any manner. Neither Ninian Beall nor his attorney appeared, but made default. Judgement was rendered against Beall.
  • 1697, Feb. 3/Feb 23: Calvert County, James Stow will, named sons Joseph King and William Stone to live with their brother John King during their minority; daughter Ann Stone to live with Ann Head until she is 16 years of age; daughter Mary Haggett.

The first rent payment was due Dec. 25, 1716. (Her mark resembled a K. Whether this is a correct copy of the mark or only a whim of the copyist is debatable.)

  • 1722, Apr. 6: Prince George's County, Patrick Andrew etux Ann of Calvert, to Stephen Yoakley, 300 acres "Backland".
