William Sayre was born between 1499 and 1520 in Hinwick, Podington, Bedfordshire, England.[1] There is no evidence to connect him to a conjectural father Thomas Sayre
He married Alice Squire, whose last name is also spelled Squyre, in about 1530 in Bedfordshire England and their children were:[2]
Children
- William,
- Thomas,
- Alice,
- Agnes
A second Alice has been speculated, to accommodate the wife of John Wheeler[1] This second Alice is highly speculative and isn't borne out by the wills of William and Alice both of which name just one daughter Alice, Alice West.
There is no son Robert mentioned in the wills of this couple.
He died about 1564 in Hinwick, Bedfordshire, England.[3]
The following records pertain to William Sayre of Hinwick.[4]
- “1545 John Faldd [Faldo], of Sutton, Beds, yeoman, to William Seyre, of Hinwick, with warrant of attorney to Daniel Payne and Edmund Squyre of Posington, to deliver seisin.
- “1553. 6 July, Peter Grey, of Chilington, Beds, to William Sare, of Hinwick, yeoman, two closes and two acres in Hinwick, then in the tenure of the said William, and formerly belonging to the priory of Harewold, lately dissolved, with warrant of attorney to David Payne, gent.
- “1562. Aug 1, William Seyre, the elder of Hinwick, to Edmund Squyre and William Abbot, of the same place, husbandmen, all his lands, &c., late of John Faldo, of Sutton, and of the dissolved priory of Harewold, to reconvey the same to the use of the said William Seyre and Alice his wife for their lives; remainder to William Seyre, their son and heir apparent, remainder to Thomas, another son of the said William and Alice; remainder to the right heirs of William and Alice. “

Research Notes
Banta, very prudently, did not project the Sayre line back beyond William who died in 1564. While his book was published in 1901 it's well researched at the English end.
With no evidence at all to link William to his conjectural father Thomas, anything earlier than William is pure speculation and the even earlier profiles look to be fictional. It would be much safer for William to be disconnected from Thomas
In his will he names a cousin, William. So assuming cousin means the same as today, the father of William the testator must have had a brother who had a son also named William.
