 Does anyone know how the Surname API call is supposed to be used? https://www.geni.com/platform/developer/help/api?path=surname&version=1

It looks like a surname ID is provided, eg http://www.geni.com/api/surname-100 queries the surname with id 100. It isn't clear how one finds the ID for a a given surname though.
