How do I know these 'facts' are historically reliable? What sources do we have, aside from Wikipedia?

A good place to start is the easily accessible Medlands database. It needs to be used cautiously because not all extant data appears there, and some of the charters it cites are known to be fraudulent, but are not noted as such.

Wikipedia itself can also provide leads to further research. A quick look at French Wikipedia http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bodogisel shows that French scholar Christian Settipani would be a significant resource. His books are very expensive, if you can even find them, but there are many lengthy extracts available on the internet.

I forgot to mention the very interesting discussions at soc.genealogy.medieval. You can almost always find a respectable debate and a great deal of meaty information:

Thank you very much for these highly interesting links! Descent from Antiquity is a fascinating topic and I'd love to put more research in this matter.
