To all desdents, managers, and curators of this persons file,
In my research it was stated that William's mother was Edith not Elizabeth. I was wondering if there was a possiblity that my research on ancestry.com was wrong. or if there was a possibility that this gentlemen had two sons named william by both women and that both boys may have married the same woman or different women with the same name to begot my family line.
Hi, Melanie! I'll start by saying that Ancestry is a good starting place for research, but the family trees you find there tend to be loaded with errors. Please know that I'm not trashing Ancestry! It's just that we always have to check the actual sources before deciding if something is accurate.
In this case, I have not done the research so I can't tell you for certain that William's mother was Elizabeth. It's certainly easy to assign children to the wrong mother when building a family tree and if that happened here, it wouldn't be the first time. I would encourage you to check the sources listed in the profile before making up your own mind.
However - as a rule of thumb, I tend to think that any profile that has 62 managers probably doesn't have any huge errors, as someone would probably have caught it already! ;-)
I'm really glad Melanie started this discussion & I'm going to argue with Jennifer a little - just because a Geni profile is curated & has 63 managers doesn't mean it couldn't have errors, in details or in relationships.:):).
It's all a work in progress here sometimes!
So lets start by nailing down, with sources that are not "other trees" what the facts might be. Given the time frame too there may be facts we will never know, and have to frame a case for how we choose to present the Geni tree.
Jennifer - (smiles)
Patricia Ann Scoggin you were looking at this family a while back. Ready to try and sort / research more?
Melanie
I'll tell you what I think so far.
That there is no evidence to support a 2nd (or 3rd marriage) by Robert Drake of Wiscomb Park, who died in 1600 and who is the father of William Drake.
The only wife I see for him is Elizabeth Prideux, daughter of Humphrey Prideaux, by Editha (AKA Elizabeth) Hatch.
Dates can be difficult to nail down, but it's hard to argue with Burke's Peerage (although there can be errors in those books of course).
But I would think it more likely the Internet trees are the problem in this case & not Burke's.
Do you have any evidence otherwise? There could have been a 2nd (or 3rd) marriage and additional children.
I've adjusted the Geni tree. There is likely a lot more to clean up in this area - that's part of why I squeaked at Jennifer! :)
Look at this site: I shows that Robert was married to Elizabeth Prideaux who were William's parents: http://books.google.com/books?id=hTUfAAAAMAAJ&pg=PA430&lpg=... ("The Magna Charta Barons and Their American Descendants with the" Pedigrees of... by Charles Henry Browning) The Google site: books.google.com/books?id=hTUfAAAAMAAJ (pg 2 when entered "Robert Drake of Wiscombe Park" for searching.)
Will keep looking.
Pat
Found another Google book that lists Elizabeth Prideaux, dtr of Humphrey Prideaux & Robert Drake of Wiscombe Park as being William's parents.
Book: Americans of Royal Descent: Collection of Genealogies Showing the Lineal... by Charles Henry Browning pg 105. [http://books.google.com/books?id=eyik0rO0HlsC&pg=PA105&lpg=...] This line goes back to Edward I., King of England by his first wife, Princess Eleanor.

Here is another Google book site: The Ancestors of Edgar Rice Burroughs by Jerry L Schneider @ http://books.google.com/books?id=ZcBg6irPpVcC&pg=PA49&lpg=P...
William---> Robert (2nd son) & Elizabeth Prideaux---> John Drake of Ashe, Devon (3rd son) & Amy Grenville--->John Drake & Margaret Cole--->John Drake of Otterton, Devon & Agnes Kailway--->John Drake & Christiana Antage--->John Drake, Esq of Mount Drake & Exmouth & Ana Billett (married between 1413 & 1422) pp 48-50.
Do you have a birth date/year for William??? If not, this site [http://awt.ancestrylibrary.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=flakey...] has years for Elizabeth & Robert's children, but Elizabeth (b. 1523) would have been in her 40's when William was born (b. 1564)! So am not sure whether to believe this or not!
Another site: http://en.rodovid.org/wk/Person:54812 dates agree with 1564 for birth.
At this site: http://www.donovann.net/webtrees/family.php?famid=F4809&ged=Nic... Elizabeth (Edith) Hatch is the mother of Elizabeth Prideaux ---LDS documentation
Have fun with all of these sites. According to GENi's "how are you related" Robert Drake is my 4th cousin, 11x's removed's 1st husband! Needless to say I don't have him in my Reunion family tree system!
Pat
well it looks like several people were very busy this weekend. I thank all of you for your work and for listening to my jumbled mess of a request to see if i was wrong or right or even possibly on the right wave length.... thank you thank you
Robert drake is my 12th great grandfather Patricia so thank you so very much cousin
Melanie
These are important lines to get correct in Geni so it's a very good exercise - i hope we keep going on it.
This is so interesting to me (and one of the reasons I enjoy Geni)
- Robert Drake, of Wiscombe Park is my 7th cousin 13 times removed
- Elizabeth Prideaux is my first cousin 16 times removed
And I have "Drake of Maine" ancestry - which may (may not) ultimately relate back to the Drakes of Devon.
hey Erica,
you know what might be funny if the drakes are related to the powers . from the research I've gathered via some books so don't quote me it was common knowledge that there was a Drake that ran with king Edward aka the Strongbow of England and that a Powers(le Poer) ran with that Drake. At least that's how it was put to me....
