I would disagree initially that Roger I would consider Raymond, one of the leaders of the First Crusade, as obscure. In his time, he was legendary, and had been offered the kingship of Jerusalem. Instead he took Tripoli, a key crusader state and also Krak de Chevaliers, an impregnable fortress in Jordan. Roger's family knew Raymond VERY well, as he was always fighting with with Bohemond (Marc de Hauteville, Roger's nephew) the famous general of the First Crusade, who took Antioch from Raymond. If Mathilde did marry Raymond, it may have been to promote some kind of peace between the Crusader kingdoms, who were wracked by personal hatreds and feuds. Maybe that's why she didn't stay his wife, if she ever was.
