Thomas ,please check this out for me, I noticed the multiple parents a few days ago and would really like to see it resolved. http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=zurekbuffalo&... . I lists an Archibald born in 1670 and died in 1760 with a brother Alexander who married Francis Catherine Sutherland. I think they both married her and the children are listed under Alexander's name. Archibalds parents were James(1640-1719) and Jennette Mackay, James father William 1610 to 1660,his father Donald 1560-1605. Do you think I might be right?? Thanks , Karen
Hello cousin Karen, I will do some digging and see what I can find, up till a few days ago my 6th great grandmother Susannah McCoy was the only McCoy I knew of in my tree,,,, now I did run a quick search this morning and have come up with this page that might be of some help,
http://hausegenealogy.com/mccoy.html
on this page it does list a John McCoy who married a unknown Martin who was from Ireland, this page also states that John died in Maryland, just like the John McCoy listed here on Geni, also shows the same children, John McCoy, I, the Immigrant so I am guessing this is our line but with one difference, it shows a different father for John, it shows a Alexander instead of a Archibald, the page also shows the same mother for John as listed here on Geni, I find no reference to Archibald, more research needs to be done on this line, there seems to be some good information online so it should not be to hard to find the answers we seek, I hope this helps, Thomas Young
Karen, I am finding some confusing info online, it may take me some time to sort this out, the link I posted earlier even has some confusing info, it says my ancestor Susannah McCoy married a Daniel Scott instead of Daniel South, but everything else I am finding says she married Daniel South, the link also says the McCoys can be traced back to Scotland circa 1000, the link you posted for me to look at takes the McCoy's back to the MacKay's, so lots more digging needs to be done, I will do what I can but I cannot make any promises,,,,Thomas
John Young Young Yes it is very confusing. I do think John's father could have been either one because his mother married both. Maybe some curators could help, please?? Thanks cousin Thomas for helping
Would be happy to help technically but we need to develop a document based case for favoring one set of parents over the other. I generally work from "the bottom" up - census reports - until you get before 1790. Then switch to town histories and court records (if any), paying particular attention to geography. And of course marriage records and cemetery data.
Good morning cousins, Erica that is my plan of attack on this issue, I do know I have a fairly solid line back to my ancestor Susannah McCoy who Married Daniel South, I need to find proofs first that Susannah is the daughter of this Archibald McCoy and work my way back, I figured I would start in Clermont county OH, then work my way back to Washington county MD, and check the histories of those counties first, I am hoping to find some true sources that way, I do have some copies of old books on England, Ireland and Scotland, I am hoping to find something in them, I will start my search tonight after the work day is done, wish me luck, Thomas
I do wish you luck! I also suggest not worrying overmuch about fine details yet. To me it's important to get a sense of the family and community - their occupations, for example. That way when it comes to decision curves on which train to follow, you can ask yourself questions like "is it likely a Presbyterian married a Catholic?" etc
Hello, everyone. I am working on the McCoy for the next week or so. I realize it's a mess at the moment.
I am not going to work at all the the ancient Scottish lines. I am starting with when the family appears in America. That would be John McCoy, Sr. As to John McCoy, Sr's parents, there are as many stories as there are McCoys, and no real documentation found yet. For now, I prefer to leave him at the top of the tree, with no parents.
Thomas Young, I saw that there was a Susannah Scott buried in Clermont County, Ohio, but when I went to FindaGrave.com, I found a Susannah South, with nearly identical information, and no Susannah Scott. Please keep me advised on your research. For now, I'm going with the sources I have, but would be happy to update the profile with your discoveries.
By the way, it's a very small world. I was born in Clermont County, but haven't been there in 30+ years. I am amazed at the famous ancestors who died there!
The Hause Genealogy site mentioned above is my primary source at the moment. I will use as much as I can from that sight to build a "backbone" for the tree. Next step is to cross-check with another well-researched site, and to locate documents. I will MP and curate as I go along. PLEASE share your own research and please feel free to send me an inbox message with questions or comments.
Sound good to you all?
Okay, THIS Archibald McCoy is not attached to the John McCoy Sr. Clan, as far as I can tell.
I did resolve the parent issues for you. One set of parents was too old -- Parents: Daniel McCoy (1633 - d.) & Sarah McCoy (1651 - 1680) -- so I broke that relationship.
According to the Hause Genealogy, John McCoy Sr may have emigrated to America with two brothers, James and Daniel. The father that I left attached to this Archibald is named James. This Archibald is the right age to be a cousin of the Archibald I am working on (the son of John McCoy Sr. ).
I hope that wasn't too confusing.
Here is a link to the McCoy family I am currently working on - John McCoy, I, the Immigrant - if any of you want to follow along.
Good morning everyone, Maria, Thank you for your help, I myself after spending the last couple of nights researching the McCoy line had decided to leave John McCoy Sr. at the top of the tree in my database, after reading over the message boards, viewing other trees, and other things I decided there was to much conflicting info out there to know for sure who his true parents were without more information. The Hause page I was and still am using it as a base or starting point. on the message boards I found a transcription of the will of Archibald McCoy, in this transcription I found my ancestor Susannah McCoy listed with the last name Smith, on the Hause page I found it listed as Scott, on one of the messages I found a reference to the will and it listed her last name as South, I viewed well over 100 different trees and all had her listed as South, so I am going with typos on the Hause page and in the transcription of the will. I also found that in everything I have read and viewed that the line to John McCoy Sr. can be considered fairly solid, I am still digging, I left many messages on the message boards and sent more than a dozen emails out asking for source information, I do hope to hear something back. Next subject is Washington county MD, the are many references to Washington county prior to 1776 on the McCoy line, those need to be checked and corrected, Washington county was not created until 1776 and was named after George Washington. I found the on Wikipedia, they have a nice page on it. I had decided to continue my search in Prince George county, I found a nice website on that county last night, however I got no research done on the McCoy line on that site, while checking the will section on the site I found about a dozen wills of other ancestors of mine and I got side tracked, before I knew it time had gotten away from me and it was 11 pm, I get up at 4 am every morning, so I had to shut down for the night, I will be getting back to that site this evening, I can post links later so some of the pages if anyone would like to have them, I must get moving now, I will check back in this afternoon after work, thanks,
Hello,
I'm new on here trying to find out where I came from and so far I've traced this back as to being my grandfather and his son Archibald being my grandfather...ect. I don't know if I missed it in the comments or not but, did anyone catch who John's wife was at this time? I'm trying to get both grandparents.
thanks
