Betty Stokes gives this snapshot of Alice Sharp:

Alice Sharp, born about 1704. Daughter of Stephen Sharp and Elizabeth Winston.

Married first John James. Had daughters Mary James born about 1724 and Elizabeth Winston James. Both born in Spotsylvania Co., VA. Elizabeth Winston James born 1726 married James Kennerly.

John James, St. George's Parish, d. Jan 23, 1725, p. Mar. 1, 1725-6. Wit. John Grayson, Stephen Sharp, John Bartaille. Ex. wife Alice James, Charles Taliaferro, Junr. Leg. wife Alice and daughter, Mary, and the child my wife now goes with. (page 24) Will Book A. 1722-1749.

Alice married second Ambrose Grayson born abt 1704, Lancaster Co., VA. died 6 Sep 1742, St. George's Parish, Spotsylvania Co., VA. They had 9 children. I'm from the oldest son, John Grayson born abt 1727 Spotsylvania Co., VA, died abt 1802, Montgomery Co., VA. I have John Grayson as a proven DAR ancestor. Ambrose was the son of John Grayson and Susanna (might be White). I have John Grayson as a proven Colonial Dames XVII Century ancestor.

Alice's 3rd husband was James Stephens.

Source: Book - Cynthia E. Snider. Bateman, Grayson, Boyette, Carter & Cole Families. I have a lot of information on the Grayson family. Not much on Alice's ancestors.

My first question for you, Betty Davis Stokes, is: what are the names & birth dates of the 9 children of Alice and Ambrose Grayson, I? Currently there *are* 9 children attached, but there is a William born before Alice's first marriage, let alone before her marriage to Ambrose.

Let me see what I have on my database. So many times the dates are ranges or guestimates. I don't remember if what is on line agrees with what I have. I'll get back with you later or tomorrow..

Grayson made his will 16 September 1742, presented by widow, Alice, 6 March 1743/4, named his wife, Alice, as executrix, and his brother, Benjamin, and his son, John, executors, and left land first to son, John, then to son, Benjamin, to son Ambrose, then to son Thomas if John and Ambrose died without issue, p. 379. His estate was appraised 5 April 1744, p. 389, and Alice was made guardian of John and Ambrose, orphans of Ambrose Grayson, Gentleman, deceased, with William Cowne and William McWilliams, securities, p. 393. Ambrose's estate accounts of 1745 show that Alice has married James Stevens and names all nine of their children as: John, Ambrose, Benjamin, Thomas, Alice, William, Susannah, Ann, and Reuben Grayson. All page references are from Will Book A, 1722-1749. The date of John James will, the fact that Alice was expecting a child at that time, and the date of Ambrose's death place the births of their children between 1729-1743. If they are listed in order of birth in the estate papers, it can be concluded that John was born about 1728,
Ambrose in 1730, Benjamin in 1732, Thomas in 1734, Alice in 1736, William in 1738, Susannah in 1740, Ann in 1741, and Reuben in 1743, possibly after his father's death.

Thank you, Betty.

re: Benjamin Grayson's death: Madison county AL or VA?

Also I see some ambiguous matching with Benjamin and possible wives of Mary Pruit and/or Stacy Ellzey ... but the dates are all over the place, so it's not clear if there was some confusion between Benjamin and a son Benjamin.

I can send you a lot that I have entered and can make a printout. My line is:
1.John who married Susanna.
I'm from his son Ambrose (all the rest of my line of descent are named John)
John had a son named Benjamin born abt 1702 who is very prominent. It will be easy to find information about him. He married Susanna Monroe, daughter of Col. Andrew Monroe, Jr. and Eleanor Spence. These Monroes are of the President Monroe line. Susannah was previously married [Charles Tyler, Jr. Tyler andWilliam Linton] Susanna was a sister of Andrew Monroe, grandfather of President James Monroe. After Susanna died, Benjamin married Miss Ewell. The estate Belle Air was named after the former home of Miss Ewell.
Benjamin and Susanna Monroe had first son named Benjamin born c 1730 Prince William Co., VA, died 1768. Married Elizabeth Osborne. After he died, his widow married Rev. James Mayre. A lot of information about this family is in Tyler's Quarterly Historical Magazine V. 4, p. 47. Also see the Registor of Kentucky Historical Society, January, 1955 for Grayson, Orr, Peers information. 2nd son was Rev. Spence Grayson born c 1734, died Nov 1798 who married Elizabeth Wagner. erd son Col. William Grayson born c 1736 married Eleanor Smallwood. 4th child Susan Monroe b c 1743. Married 1761 to John Orr.
Benjamin, son of Benjamin also had a son named Benjamin who married Ann Bronough,

All of those Benjamins may not be from our line. There was a Dr. Richard Grayson who did a news letter a long time ago. At that time, we didn't have him connected. His son was still looking when I last checked.
Benjamin 1802, son of John Grayson I
Benjamin 1730 son of Benjamin II
Benjamin III 1758, son of Benjamin 1730
Benjamin 1761, son of Rev. Spence Grayson, Grandson of Benjamin I
