Hello there! Welcome to the BillionGraves Team! We're glad you've decided to join us.
This thread is just a nice little place for everyone to give a quick little introduction and say why you've decided to collaborate with us and what you hope to get out of it. Do you want to photograph, transcribe, help with languages, a little bit of everything? Do you simply like poking around in old cemeteries and think this would be a good excuse to do it? Pull up a chair and say hello.
Three icebreaker questions if you can't think of anything to say or figure everyone on Geni already knows everything about you:
1) Where do you live? (Major city, region, country -- whatever you're comfortable sharing.)
2) Who's your favorite black sheep ancestor?
3) Which fruit or vegetable would you completely ban from earth if you were some kind of emperor? (This is not project-related; I just wanted a fun question.)
1) I'm in Connecticut. I'll take photographs around here and probably other parts of New England and New York as well. I like poking around cemeteries.
2) So, so many choices, but my favorite black sheep would have to be the collective group who attended the North Hinsdale (New Hampshire) Church and got thrown out over a theological dispute, so they came back one day during services and broke in through the windows and started a brawl in the pews.
3) Bananas. They are just the worst.
1. I live in the Mile High City -- Denver, Colorado. I'm planning to use this project as an excuse to take some day trips out to the little rural cemeteries out on the eastern plains.
2. My favorite black sheep ancestor is Asahel Lomax. He died of blood poisoning after being bitten in a bar room brawl.
3. I would ban tomatoes. Those things are poisonous.
Before starting to take photos with the billiongraves app, be aware of the statement in the term about copyright to the images taken by the app.

Oh man, Judy, you have to try my turnip casserole! It's amazing, really. Everyone always says they hate turnips, and then they try it and end up having thirds and asking for the recipe. I will make it part of my goal to make a turnip-lover out of you.
Though Justin is 100% correct about tomatoes. They were my second choice.
Two countries so far! And three wildly different regions. This is good. Maybe I'll get a map going. :)
I have used both Billion Graves and findagrave.com to search for relatives. I have found more on Find-a-grave then on Billion graves, plus many times the find-a-grave site has a link between family members for spouse to spouse and parent-to-child, and many times has the obit or other information for the deceased that is not on the gravestone. The graves for the links do not necessarily have to be in the same cemetary.
FYI - I'm in the Kansas City area.
I'll need to think about the Black sheep ancestor - tough question.
Oh - I forgot to add that many times I place a link from Geni to Billion graves or Find-a-grave under the burial information in the about this event box of the timeline tab of Geni. The the geni user can find the picture by just a mouse click.
Comedian Sid Caesar recently died and his Geni profile point to his find-a-grave page.

Welcome to the team, Howard! Great to have you. :)
One of the great things about this project is that, with a groundswell of Geni users volunteering, we'll be able to greatly increase the number of graves and records available on BillionGraves. All the records will always be free to everyone, and they will also be matched to their corresponding profiles here on Geni.
Once you join at http://billiongraves.com/geni , you'll see that you actually can link family members, add obituaries, and upload supporting documents to BillionGraves profiles. You can also add military information that's really nicely presented and even can include replicas of the faith symbols on the stones. There are all kinds of neat little features and things you can do. I've been playing around with it all week and I find something new each time I log in.
So we'll try to make some great profiles together! Thanks for joining us. :)
Hello from Silicon Valley, California! I was so excited when I saw the announcement of this new portal and partnership on Facebook. This will really help to solidify Geni/MyHeritage's position in the genealogy world.
Ashley, right now my car is broken down and California (FINALLY!) is getting rain. Once I'm mobile again, and the soil dries out, there's some old cemeteries in my old neighborhood that I can work on, plus there's historic cemeteries where my husband's ancestors are buried, in the Central Valley of California and the Sierra foothills. I've already taken photos in some of the cemeteries, so I'll add them as soon as I can.
I saw post recently that the fastest growing number of new entries is in Australian. I'll have to find that and post it. Any way, we need to find out whose doing what down there and get them to join forces with us.
The information about Australia I mentioned in my previous post appeared in the BillionGraves blog post dated Feb. 2, 2014 - http://blog.billiongraves.com/.
"We had an amazing start of the year creating more than 350,000 records from all over the world, especially Australia who is competing aggressively as our number 1 country for uploads! "
@ I live in Lefaivre, Ontario, Canada. We are halfway between Ottawa, Ontario And Montreal, Quebec. And I love cemeteries. Whenever I visit a new town or area the very first place I visit is the local cemetery. I think you can tell a lot about a place by their cemetery. I do not have a smart phone but I will certainly help in any way I can. I do have some pictures from cemeteries from New Brunswick, Gaspe, Quebec, as well as Carleton, Nepean Ontario.
As for my favorite Black sheep I don't know yet, there are so many interesting people in our trees that I can't decide.
The fruit I would ban is watermelon. Just saying it gives me the shivers!
1) I'm in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia. Might be more commonly known as Malaysian Borneo.
2) Unfortunately I don't hear a lot of stories about my ancestors.
3) I believe all fruits and veggies have the right to exist, even if I don't like them!
I'll help wherever I can but I do want to venture out into the graveyards again and start documenting, as soon as I figure out the smartphone issue. I'm on a Nokia Lumia and there's no app for that.
We have a number of old British graves here both in the Catholic and Anglican cemeteries. I have photos of past visits somewhere. I find it fascinating to go in and see what I can find. Right now, I'm familiarising myself with the transcribing process.
Thanks for inviting me to join the project, Ashley! I'm a huge fan of both BillionGraves and Find-A-Grave. Collaborative projects rock! I've been transcribing for BillionGraves for the last year and would love to take grave photos - so far haven't found any cemeteries in driving distance that haven't been pretty well covered.
1. I'm in Atascadero, California, almost exactly halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles. You get a prize if you weren't born in this area but can figure out how to pronounce it.
2. To my great disappointment, the only black sheep I've found so far is a great-grandfather who kited checks in the Thirties. I'm still hoping for a horsethief...
3. I actually love almost all veggies and fruits, with the exception of the horrible bell pepper. They're so freaking rude that you can't taste anything else once they've entered the picture. /blech If I were Empress of the World, I'd outlaw bell peppers!
Hi everyone, I'm planning on contributing somehow but as yet have to investigate Billion Graves more thoroughly to discover how best to do so as I don't own a smart phone.
I live in Watlington in the Oxfordshire Chilterns England. Reputedly one of the smallest towns in the country and the churchyard is just around the corner from where I live.
Hmmm black sheep in the family? Not sure but we do have a claim to fame which is far from pleasant - Sweet Fanny Adams is on my extended tree.
Raw Tomatoes I'd go along with but I couldn't do without my pasta sauce so please don't ban tomatoes and Christmas wouldn't be the same without brussel sprouts.
I think I would ban onions. No food should make you cry!
Hi,
Only see BG here on Geni now. Used it for some time already.
I travel a lot and sometimes just have time to stop and "pin" a graveyard.
A lot of times the app does not want to save the spot. Not sure if it is the Cell phone connection. They can improve that part of the app.
PS: if you're going to take pics in an old "deserted" graveyard, take insect repellent with and stick your trousers in your socks. I got a tic bite and tic bite fewer once from walking in the long grass taking pic of headstones.
You might also want to take a pruner and cloth with. Just to get a clear shot.
