Hi Sharon - how do I add Hendrik Venter, the SA Venter Progenitor to the Project? We have established through 'triangulation' that his Y-DNA haplo would have been R1a1. This is the haplogroup of about 20 SA Venter males who have been tested.

Oooh fantastic! I can start by adding him for you. Are there profiles for the other twenty guys too?

Thank you, Sharon - please do! With 'profiles' I assume you are referring to Geni Profiles? I don't know who of those guys are also on Geni, and I don't have their pedigree charts.

You might be interested to know about the following projects of Family Tree DNA: The Cape Dutch Y-DNA Stamvader Project, and The Venter Surname DNA Project.

And just to be more exact - the Y-DNA haplotype of SA Venter guys is: R1a1a1b1a1; we test positive for the SNP R-M458, which is Slavic - Central European.

Hmm - long Afrikaans sentence - doesn't look quite right.

Dit sal jou ander afstammelinge op Geni wat ook jou haplotype dra gee.

Piet Retief Venter - The History Link Graph throws up about 20 Venter GENi users who should share this haplogroup with you:

Louis Joubert 1983, Piet, Geo 1992. Geo, Lieb,Rudi 1986, Wilhelm, you, Jan Dirk Grobler, Kobus, Danie, Carolus, Barend Johannes 1978, Hannes, Chris 1999, Boetie, Daniel, SAgrys, Jan 1950, Douw

THat just with a quick mouse-over of the results, We could search for their profiles if you wanted to contact them. I presume that a lot of them are your family and cousins who you know already?

My daughter in law's father should then also have the same Private

Yes! Daan I'll add him.

Sharon, you guys are certainly 'clued up'! I'm happy that we've now got it 'as good as it gets' :-) I do have contact with some of these guys. Please do what needs to be done to include them in this worthy Project.

Piet - try playing around with Jeff Gentes' wonderful History Link App http://historylink.herokuapp.com/

It does lots of things - like building a pie graph for your ancestors that you can print out; Or Showing which of your ancestors are included in projects for being famous

If you know your Y-DNA Progenitor, it provides a way to check if there are others on the Geni tree who share him with you: + 'Ancestor Graph' ( top right) + Little boxed face in the middle, next to your name, & change the person to your Y-DNA PROG's profile link + Change the box options below to '15 Generations to Display'; 'Descendants' & 'Y-DNA' + 'Build Graph' (green box, top right) + Choose the 'Status' circle option - as this will show you which of his descendants are also Geni users (claimed profiles)

Toby Venter just bought Kyalami for R205 million...

Shew!! maybe he'll give his Venter cousins free season tickets? Get going on that pie graph Piet - to find your 'brothers from another mother' who are on Geni :-)

Thanks, Sharon - this is interesting!

Sharon my y-chromosoom is Haplogroep R1b hope this is what you need Gideon

With pleasure Gideon. Thankyou for adding to our data base. It's just getting better & better.
You do know your Y-DNA ancestry is linked back to Appel, don't you?

Hi Sharon thanks for adding my y and yes I know it links back to Appel as I was one of the test subject at Pretoria University thanks again

How fascinating for you to have been part of that study. Cutting edge Genetic Genealogy being done right here in SA.

Piet Retief Venter, is the terminal SNP for Venter R-M458 ? (on FTDNA)

Hi Don - yes we are R-M458, and with two further clades 'downstream' - L1029 and YP445. Our haplotype is 'Slavic Central European'. This would also have been the haplotype and clades of Hendrik Venter, the progenitor of the Venter family of South Africa.

Thanks Piet, that proves I am not Venter as my terminal SNP (haplotype is R-M10145).
My Father was adopted in Pretoria around 1935 (By people with the Venter surname), but there were still Venters coming up in my DNA matches so I wanted to be sure.

I have also done a Y67 with no luck....

I wonder if, in time, Geni will be the ideal place for South Africans to use to solve these adoption mysteries? Holding thumbs.

Yes, Sharon, Y-DNA results can help to solve adoption mysteries. Don, can you find out from FTDNA what your haplogroup is? The main European Y-DNA haplogroups are: R1a1, R1b1, E, H, and I. You can have a look at the website of Robert Venter of California. The URL is: www.venter.org - you will notice that there is an FTDNA Venter Surname DNA Project. You can also have a look at the Cape Dutch/ Kaaps-Hollands Project of FTDNA. What is/was your father's birth surname?

Hi Sharon, Geni will have to drop their prices drastically if they want to be of any use, especially to poor South Africans.
It is quite useless to me now as they want to charge everytime I try confirm any matches.
Piet my Haplogroup on 23and me is: Paternal Haplogroup: R1b1a2a1a1a4 (23andMe)
On FTDNA: L47 > Z159 > Z160 > CTS3777 > M10145

Yes, I am a member of those two groups but have run dry there too. My Father was adopted so we have no idea what my Paternal surname is, hence my search... the Venter surname is from his adopted parents.

I think you can upload on a free account, Don. You don't have to be a pro user to do it. They're still ironing out the wrinkles of uploading, though - so please don't give up. If it's still not working tomorrow, I'll find someone to help you.

Thank you for helping us, Sharon. Don, it is your paternal haplogroup that I was looking for - the R1b1. This differs from the Venter haplogroup, which is R 1a1. The R1b1 haplo is Atlantic Coast Western European. Some American Venters belong to this haplogroup.

Thanks Sharon, I have now uploaded my DNA results to Geni, so lets see what "falls out of the family tree" ;-)

Thanks Piet, I have heard there are many Venter names in Romania.
