To all Geni users, curators and anybody else, RVK has been trying to access private profiles which have nothing to do with him, for many months. he has been warned and reported to Geni a few times. Geni's new rules are quite specific. If near relatives do not want their parents, grandparents etc. on public view, that is their right. RVK keeps asking curators such as Kevin to make these changes. Recently, another curator changed all of my grandparents, their siblings and their children to public view. I changed them all back. Today, my cousin's father and grandparents were changed by Kevin to public view. My cousin does not want this. I have changed them back.

if you're so keen on keeping historical profiles private you shouldn't add them to the world tree.

Private User,

The only time that you cannot control the privacy is when someone merges in a public profile to your private profile as the private profile will now automatically become a public profile.

Kevin

In case you didn't notice, I created most of the profiles, and am the only manager, and they were private since I created them and have never been merged and should have not been changed. If the grandchildren of a person create two profiles and merge them and the grandparent is still alive or they do not want the profile public then of course it will not be public, why should it be? Please don't try to justify RVK's illegal actions and requests.

RVK your own profile, your parents, grandparents, great grandparents and further back are all PRIVATE so I recommend that all available curators immediately rush and change them to public view as I am very interested to see them.

as a reminder Rod, I created many of those profiles, added you as a manager and relinquished myself as a manager. stop whining

Private User,

I'm not justifying anything, but telling you the truth about what happens when a private profile is merged into a public profile. The result is that this new profile is automatically public.

Only deceased and MPs can be public, with one caveat, MPs are always public.

Kevin

Mike Stangel,

What should be done to please both Private User and Private User?

Kevin

Roderick: Did you ever explicitly set them to Private (before someone changed them)? Geni changed its rules last summer, and all "default" deceased profiles were made public. This was publicly announced several times, including advice to explicitly set the privacy on any profile(s) that users did not wish to be made public.

In practice there are limits to how far back you can go with private profiles - I think it works out to birth dates in the late 18th century on average, and they have to be direct blood relatives.

There is also a "courtesy" issue involved - to make deceased family profiles private too far back is considered rude and selfish.

You have to decide for yourself where you want to set the line - I set it very tight (immediate and living relatives only). Other people exclude out to great-grandparents or so. (I had a small problem, namely a highly public ex-great-uncle - he's actually in Wikipedia - and it didn't look right to leave him hanging out there alone.)

Private User, Please answer Private User's questions.

Maven is quite right, though this has nothing to do with the changes last summer -- looking at Roderick's grandfather, I see that it was made public two months ago by curator Dan Cornett, and Roderick set it right back. Dan doesn't just go through the tree making people's grandparents public, so I'm sure he did this at someone's behest -- perhaps rvk as Roderick suggests?

Private User I applaud you for relinquishing management, that shows your commitment to fairness. Unless someone equally close to these profiles as Roderick is demanding that they be made public, I have to side with him fully; they're his grandparents and they are recent enough that most people would agree there's still a right to privacy. As Maven points out, though, once you get back a few more generations it's our intent that profiles be made public for the purposes of sharing / collaboration. I typically use "born 150 years ago" as a cut-off for when I think a user would have to present a compelling reason for a profile to be private.

Mike Stangel that's good.. thank you for clarifying I use the same idea.. Unless of course as a example your the son of billy gates and you want privacy because you don't want to be harrassed i don't make things private because it just creates issues.. so I can see the reasoning behind it. I keep the last 100 years private so no one can steal grandpa's ssi number etc etc but after that unless of course your related to hitler or somthing I don't see needs for entire blocks to be private but people do that anyway

Mohamad Habrul Ulum Othman,

Working on them while typing in this message.

Kevin

Mohamad Habrul Ulum Othman - the 1st 2 requests done, as well as many around them. Please resolve Data conflicts - where ever you can.

Mohamad Habrul Ulum Othman,

Kimberly Louise Fraser,

Got what I could.

Kimberly Louise Fraser,

Done.

Please have a look around as I know that I have missed some in Matt's tree. Most of his tree are Zombies and we are getting closer to making them where required fully deceased.

Post more that need to be made deceased.

Kevin

Kimberly Louise Fraser,

Got all of them done.

There is a merge that can be done.

See:

http://www.geni.com/merge/compare/6000000002480535349?&to=60000...

There are probably more out there.

Kevin
