I am wondering why this is. I cannot enable the headstone sufficiently large to read, but even if it does read "Dubrill', her heritage is clearly documented and the correct spelling of either du Breuil, Du Breuil, or Dubreuil is known. Are we paying homage to an an engraver, who did a poor job?

Sam Go to Judith's profile and go to media tab click on it there is a legible picture. The picture on the profile is the best that Geni will give.

I agree if you go up the tree to her great grandfather and further up Dr. Christoffe du Breuil (DuBreuil) the last name was Du Breil

I am assuming that people anglicized it..

(Christoffe) (Christopher) / Christophe dubreuil is probably the proper writing in french

i have found

I followed your instructions, Dale, and understand the need for at least maintaining consistency with tombstone engravings.

Angus, I have been up that tree for many years ( :D ), and you are correct. I have seen the name spelled Du Breil, without the 'u'. However, my research deeper into France, proper, has found that the word, breuil, originally referred to "a very thickly forest, quite moist year round." The people who lived in and near those woods were referred to as "Given Name, du Breuil. Du Breil was one of many misspellings, that occurred.

As an aside I live in Northern Ontario next to Quebec, in 1948 there was a very bad forest fire but the lumber was still harvestable. Two or three Dubreil brothers came to and started harvesting the lumber and started shipping to US and Canada, There company was known as Dubreil Brothers and the town where they lived was known as Dubreilville.

That is a great share, Angus. I have never heard of them before now. Wow!
Any more information you have regarding them, will be deeply appreciated and annotated with you as the source.
