I found a number of Hicks families that most people believe are unrelated to have been merged today. I need some help from experts in the Hicks family of NORTH CAROLINA to weigh in here.

It appears that THIS Robert Hicks is not the same person as Capt Robert Hicks the famous Indian fighter who had a different wife and eleven children with her. See the link in this profile for more on that.

Also, there is a question as to the mother of Esther Luten Hicks, Robert's wife. Is it Mary Cullen or Mary Currier?

Capt. Robert Hicks, Indian Trader does not seem to be the same as Robert Hicks of Chowan, NC. Please confirm.

Major Thomas Luten his father-in-law, is still attached to two wives, but one of them does not make sense geographically since Major Luten certain died in Chowan County, NC.

Can one of you comment and clarify?

I agree, they are not the same Robert Hicks. Here's another discussion on that topic. http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/HICKS/2005-12/1135081705 This discussion gives the wife of Thomas Luten as "Mary Currier?" with a question mark.

Definitely two different men... Two different places... Eyeballing it now - it looks like its all unmerged again, so I'm a day late and dollar short weighing in probably.,..

Definitely NOT the same person.

If you compare the timelines for both men, side by side, you will see the difference in dates of birth and in places of death. Other than being born in Virginia, Robert Hicks, of Chowan County has only NC items on his timeline, while Capt. Robert Hicks, Indian Trader has only Virginia items.

I do notice that Capt. Hicks needs more/better documentation. One daughter was supposedly born when he was 12, and five children appear to be quintuplets.

Based on Erin's source, I would go with Currier over Cullen for the wife of Thomas Luten.

Donald, you are never too late. We like to have our decisions reaffirmed.

As I said, I unmerged three Hicks families. One I think in New England, one the family of Capt. Robert Hicks, and the third the Chowan, NC family.

I'd love you all to take on curating. I curated because I wanted to make sure that the Robert Hicks of Chowan, NC line was protected since I believe the general facts are correct, but there seems to be a lot of work to be done for Hicks families in the South to prevent future merges.

I probably left a few loose ends too when I disconnected the Southern Hicks from the New England Hicks :) But I'm not too worried about those.

Okay, I'll take on the Virginia line. I don't want the New England line - I'm trying to leave New England to the ones who know the history best.

Hatte Blejer (absent until Nov 1) - I've re-curated Capt. Hicks - Capt. Robert Hicks, Indian Trader. I'll do more clean-up when I can, but first I need to finish the Lee-Bland problem you gave me a few days ago.

I live to make work for you Virginians ;)!

That's okay, Hatte - Mayflower gets all the glory but Virginia was here first!

I've been struggling with this question for a while. Robert Hicks of Chowan does seem to have had dealings in VA. There is a deed dated 20 Apr 1709 with Arthur Kavanaugh for the purchase of land on the north side of the Meherrin made in Chowan Co, but possibly for land in VA. Then there's a later deed, dated 15 Apr 1726, in which Robert Hicks sells land in Lawnes Creek Parish, Surry Co VA, on north side of the Meherrin to Arthur Kavenaugh. Different Robert Hicks? I think so, but it may be difficult to disentangle them in the records.

I am new to all this. My link begins with Nora Maude Hicks. I am told that we are supposedly linked to the Hicks who were Wyandotte Indian Chiefs here in Kansas City, Ks. My father took us as children to visit there graves. I cannot find any proof. If you know anyone, please let me know. Thanks.

Have gone through another Hicks disambiguation effort (and recurated a couple for you, Hatte).

I haven't gone into parents & children beyond what's already been researched & attached.

None have anything to do with the Cherokee Hicks family as far as I know.

Here are our three Hicks families that get themselves tangled

Capt. Robert Hicks, Indian Trader married Winifred Hicks

Robert Hicks, of Chowan County married Winifred Hicks

And Robert Hicks, of the Plymouth Colony married Margaret Hicks

I wouldn't be surprised if descent is "off."

Correction: Esther Hicks was the wife of Robert Hicks, of Chowan County (the Chowan county NC line)

I'll check the Plymouth Hicks family. Thank you very much for stepping up to do some further clean up.
