John Edwards (Edwardes) - Evidence as to parentage of John Edwards/Edwardes?

Having had this profile brought to my attention (thank you, gordon blais!), and having spent some time on it, I'm now becoming convinced that, despite all the web trees to the contrary, John Edwards is not the son of Robert Hywel ap Ieuvan Fychan.

Has anybody got any evidence as to his parentage?

I'll leave this up for a while; if nothing is forthcoming in a week or so, I'll disconnect him and add a curator's note.

Oh, and Im taking off the picture, which is of a different Edwards (Gerard Edwards), and from about 200 years later.
