Jason, maybe you Curators see positive effects.
All that we mere-schmear users - even Pros - see is scads and scads of manager-less Private profiles that they *can't do anything whatsoever with*, AND massive *unremediable* disruptions to the Geni path algorithm.
I kid you not - NOTHING works in these situations, not "walking the path", not reverse-checking, not NOTHING. Shouldn't happen, *does* happen.
Seriosuly if U people Private User Judith "Judi" Elaine (McKee) Burns etc etc don't have anything nice at all to say about this wait time I wish it better unsaid.. erica is right yet maven is also .. for once because I am sick of all the griping.. I agree though this problem needs to be resolved before My great great grand kids time but it needs to be done right and Sadly we have to be resigned to the fact that it may take a decade or more til they get it right to every one's satisifaction but lets hope it;s not that long...
I am with you Mavin @Private User it would of been nice for the "common users" non-paying and pro alike to have been enlightened on this - wither a test or what ever it is - feed back has been varying different
depending on who answers the question "stories" as to
being "a bug" - " new functionality Geni currently are testing" - "an acquisition" and Just ignore those matches for a while. They are a temporary part of some new feature Geni is working on. Stay tuned... "
BUT it is still very annoying, frustrating and affecting trees on GENI adversely right now and affecting OUR OWN PERSONA tree/branch own personal trees and our ability to work with them properly and efficiently ...
I am trying to side track them and ignore them if at all possible unless asked to try and "fix" a profile that they are affected by - spent 3-4 hours doing that yesterday - needless to say 2 profiles n got some much needed documentation in the "about me"
Right now I am working on match my own personal computer file to GENI and changing names in my personal file to match those that are on GENI - and constantly running into these NEW "private" profiles that have been dumped into the system since mid March to the end of March - with no user name attached that I can see and when trying to complete the requested merge you get "You are forbidden" to do this action
as I have plans for working on it offline through Ancestry and also possibly putting it up on another site and do not want conflicts occurring saying is "not having all your eggs in one basket" and yes you do need multiple sites as you can unearth a tremendous amount of new information that way.
You see, Judi, it's an attitude of "annoyance" that is hard to take.
We "all" work very hard on our genealogy and in making geni a positive experience.
But this kind of language is difficult to keep in tune with the collaborative model we "all" believe in for Geni, and Geni most of all.
Geni is "the little company that could.". Those of us who gave been here from the beginning, or near enough to start date, have lived through all the growing pains. And it's been well worth it, at least for me.
I am very proud of all we - all have accomplished, and look forward to this next step in improving the site.
I agree with Erica. It is pointless to be impatient. Just be patient, and wait. We, want have the very best, "One World Family Tree" using Geni.
I know It will take a little time, but my suggestion is to continue to march, and that most of it. There is alot of us that are in the same boat. But, we still have some more inputting to do on the other links on our tree. That is my 2 cents!
Maven - as you know, with any venture, it's ready when it's ready.
I don't expect positive results for myself (personally) from whatever the enhancement is, that would be setting myself up for false expectations.
But I "trust" that it's a good business decision & will benefit my collaborators. Or it wouldn't be around annoying us. :):)
Back to merge monkey duties, and there's all kinds of good genealogy needed ....
oh well its nice for those who run into these who can freely merge with out constantly "begging for help" so I just side step them for now as I said I am seeing a lot of work ahead for all when ever this is released as I am finding any where from 2- 8 duplicate profiles for some that are already on GENI.
Again it would of just been nice if some of us others were forewarned this was going down.
Back to comparing my offline tree with online...
why I try and stay off discussion boards - opinions and feelings do not matter and held against a person.....
It's really not that much fun to be merging, you know. I'm doing it instead of tree building & sourcing to help those who cannot - use of my curating rights for the benefit of all. We all are.
So "thank you's" between us all for the various ways we contribute is what I'd like to see.
Maven & Judi, you're among the best genealogists I've been honored to work with, you both help so much, and accurately so. I thank you, and appreciate the help, and I will continue to try and help as best I can.
I don't like it that you guys allways make research a grudge match... There Is no shame in asking for help.. I do like doing things on my own but some times asking for help is needed.. I Don't get what you mean about opinons and feelings being held against each other.. With the exception of feeling ignored sometimes...
Thank You @Erica Howton i was just taught that way and by snail mail and some that I considered the best mentors tho we never met tjey gave freely of all which included documentation one dear lady never lived to help me as she wanted - always said when she got better... never came she was fighting cancer she and her daughter trudge cemeteries recording inscriptions by pencil/pen paper; abstracting courthouse records to give freely to others.
I guess I was just taught wrong...
Subject: Managerless Profiles by Lee Beasley Garvey, dtd 4/16/2016
Hi Folks, Can anyone direct me to these said profile that has been merged, and has no managers?
I have over 50,000 profiles in my FTM, and I would like to see if there is any profiles that are linked to me. If so, I'll help manage, and merged them to my profile. Only, if they are linked to any of my profiles.
Before, I start asking questions. I would like to say, that if I was Geni. First, I would identify the member(s) that added said profiles, and make an attempt to contact them, and find out what are their intentions. If that fails, then find out who discovered the abandonment of said profiles, and how did they come across the profile(s). It must be clear that they are abandon. with no attached profiles that can be linked to.
Next, I would create a bulletin board with said abandon profile(s) and post them on the board (Who, When, Where, and Why), If there is many with different surnames, alphabetically list them, and make them able to click on the link (button) for viewing.
Most likely, their is a family members out there, that has a continuing lineage of profiles that can be connected to the orphan(s), and they are welling to adopt said orphan(s).
To me, this would be the best course of action, and it would favorable to this Geni family.
I have also, ran across almost this issues.
On my tree, starting with Hannah Bagg (Phelps). There is now four generations of <Private> on my lineage, that was not there when I started inputting my direct lineage(s).
My belief is that a certain curator(s) initiated this issue, and it is complicating Genis plan and goals for a one world family tree. This is what I believe this is happening to some. It might be personal, because they are not able to investigate the issue(s), or does not want to be bothered with the confusion. Or, unable to solve the issue, that is generated among the added on by, the manager( s), or by the invited curator(s).
One of my main goals is to see "The Big Link" (Genis One World Family Tree), to manage, and be a curator for my direct family line(s) (The Bagg Clan) and their family lines. In doing so, I must be able to help others with their issues, and solve their issues that would be acceptable to most or all.
But before I start recruiting my Bagg Families to Geni. These types of issues must be resolved, before they are invited.
Please excuse my abstract, fragmented grammar. I am currently on meds which has its issue with my chemistry.
I hope this issue will be resolved very very soon! By the way! Is there a (Think Tank) within this structure? Because, I've been involved with "DOD's" many important programs for at least five years. Such as being a member of their think tank
Must go now, have to do some honey do's.
Ken
There are TWO Hannah Bagg Phelps. You just added one, but there was already an MP. Also, yours has different parents, so that needs to be investigated.
I am a Phelps descendant. Margaret Phelps married Lodowick Gallup. They are my great great great grandparents. I also belong to a Phelps group on Facebook, and the manager of that group is an expert.
Yours: Hannah Bagg
The MP: Hannah Bagg
Kenneth Joseph Bagg Neder - I'd be happy to search for you before you completely duplicate the Phelps tree, most of which already exists, and much of which is curated and Master Profiles.
