A Merge on Nov. 21, 2016 -
profile managed by Erin Spiceland and 9 others, curated by Erica Howton - had First Name: Hendrick Henry [Middle Name was blank] -- Last Name: Cutright -- Birth Surname: Kortregt
other profile - managed by Ronald Phillips -- had First Name: Peter -- Middle Name: Hendricksen Henry -- Last Name: Kortregt [Birth Surname was blank]
Above merge was at 10:39 PM acc. to listing on my Revisions Tab - it is the second merge done in November 2016
Just before that is a merge done at 10:38 PM
profile managed by Erin Spiceland & 8 others, Curator Erica Howton -- had First Name: Hendrick Henry -- Last Name: Cartright -- Birth Surname: Kortregt
other profile - managed by Richard Sandstrom -- had First Name: Peter Hendricksen Henry -- Last Name: Kortregt -- [Birth Surname was blank]
-- Neither had any value in Middle Name Field
Before that was a merge on June 14, and before that, a merge on May 17.
Clicking on View for the June 14 merge currently just gets me an elaborate Error Message
The merge for May 17 had
profile managed by Erin Spiceland & 7 others, Curated by Erica Howton -- had First Name: Hendrick Henry -- Last Name: Cutright -- Birth Surname: Kortregt
other profile - managed by Kathy Melancon -- had First Name: Henrick -- Last Name: Cutright [Birth Surname was blank]
-- Neither had any value in Middle Name Field.
The merge before that was on Apr 27 2015 and had
Profile managed by Erin Spiceland & 6 others, Curated by Erica Howton -- had First Name: Hendrick Henry -- [Middle Name was blank] -- Last Name: Cutright -- Birth Surname: Kortegt
other profile managed by Melanie Rock -- had First Name: Hendrick -- Middle Name: Henry -- Last Name: Kortegt -- [Birth Surname was blank]
The merge before that was on Aug 11, 2011 - but that one does not have a "View" available.
Currently, the profile shows one more, more recent merge - done also on Nov. 21, this time at 10:52 PM per my Revision Tab --
profile managed by Erin Spiceland & 10 others and Curator Erica Howton -- First Name: Hendrick Henry -- Middle Name: Hendricksen Henry -- Last Name: Cutright -- Birth Surname: Kortregt
other profile managed by Carmen Vaz-Altenberg & 1 other -- First Name: Henry -- Middle Name: Henry -- Last Name: Cutright -- [Birth Surname was blank]
At no point did any of the Profiles for which a View of the Merge is given have an entry in the Display Name Field, nor is there any such revision mentioned in the Revision Tab.
Therefore it seems quite clear that the statement on the Profile:
"note Nov 2016
Display name before sourcing and resolving data conflicts:
Hendrick Henry Hendricksen Henry (Kortregt) Cutright"
Is not a correct statement about an actual entry in the Display Name Field.
The best guess I can make is that it is a comment about the auto-generated Display name shown to folks whose Name Preference had "Show Middle Name" checked.
NOT actual entry in Display Name.
NOT what the auto-generated Display name was for folks who had Not Checked "Show Middle Name" in their Name Preferences.
Hendrick Henry Hendricksen Henry (Kortregt) Cutright was the name that showed prior to resolving data conflicts.
It's a challenging area of the tree, as it's third generation from the immigration from the Low Countries (what is now Belgium).
From studying sources it appears that the Anglicized surname of Cutright was not used until the next generation, so it was removed from both name fields.
It appears that Hendricksen was erroneously carrying forward a Patronym when it was not used.
"Henry" is the anglicized name for Hendrick, he was "known as Henry." So the choices are to put it in the display name or (fudge) using the middle name field with quotes.
Putting "Henry" in the first name field is not really an option, as he was baptized Hendrick and apparently used it as his legal name all his life.
I would be happy to hear from Dutch speakers on this (whatever his dialect was originally) -- particularly since his parents & grandparent names still have data conflicts to resolve and lock down.
Erica -
"Hendrick Henry Hendricksen Henry (Kortregt) Cutright" was the name that showed for you - since you have "Show Middle Name" checked (and have preference for Birth Surname to show in parentheses and before last name) -- others with other choices in their Name Preferences would have seen it differently!!
Moreover -- It showed that way because of the merge You did
of a Profile which had multiple managers and had had First Name: Hendrick Henry -- [Middle Name blank] -- Last Name: Cutright -- Birth Surname: Kortregt -- which it had had thru other merges, and from back at least as far as 3/8/2011 -
to another which had First Name: Peter -- Middle Name: Hendricksen Henry -- Last Name: Kortregt [Birth Surname was blank]
Because of the way Geni works, this merge left < Hendrick Henry > in the First Name Field, and did not in any way add < Peter > to the first name field -- BUT
because the middle name field on the Primary Profile was blank, it did insert the Middle Name from this non-primary profile (which had had Peter as First Name) into the Middle Name Field of the Primary Profile.
So from back at least as far as 3/8/2011 thru to the merge you did on Nov. 21, 2016 everybody was happy with "Hendrick Henry" in the First Name field and having the Middle Name blank.
-- -- and it would have appeared to you and all others with Show Middle Name checked AND to those who had Show Middle Name unchecked
(each with show Birth Surname in parentheses and before last name) as
Hendrick Henry (Kortregt) Cutright
The only reason it appeared differently was because of that merge you did, and it seems likely the only reason that one had names in the Middle Name Field was because it had "Peter" in the First Name Field.
PS - "View" on Revision Tab for the Merge shows Erica as Curator from at least Apr 27, 2015 - but the Revision Tab does not report "Master" until Nov 22, 2016
- Erica - now wondering - was this Profile MP'd for the first time on Nov 22, 2016 [in which case there may be a bug with how "View" is working for Merges] or were you truly the Curator from at least Apr 27 2015 or ??
I made MP when I resolved the data conflicts to sources on Nov 22.
Even if someone is slightly incorrect I don't not do the merge, I merge and then resolve, to my best knowledge of period, sources, languages, etc.
I don't quite understand your comment about:
"So from back at least as far as 3/8/2011 thru to the merge you did on Nov. 21, 2016 everybody was happy with "Hendrick Henry" in the First Name field and having the Middle Name blank. ..."
I have seen various configurations for how to deal with a "commonly known as" Anglicized name, in quotes or ( ). My own personal preference tends to be using the display name for historic figures, but I'd rather try and avoid display name use, if possible.
I will not use a "commonly known as" name in the first name field in my tree as it screws up my tree matches.
And it's bad grammar.
Second message -- re: a merge done at 10:38 PM
profile managed by Erin Spiceland & 8 others, - should have Last Name: Cutright -- do not know if error was my mistyping or an auto-suggestion that I didn't notice
So - as a result of a merge with a version that had the First Name Peter -- at the time Erica reports how the name was displayed, it had:
First Name: Hendrick Henry
-- Middle Name: Hendricksen Henry
--Last Name: Cutright -- Birth Surname: Kortregt
Depending on one's settings in Name Preferences, each and every one of the following - plus more - is what Geni showed for
"Display name before sourcing and resolving data conflicts"
Hendrick Henry Hendricksen Henry (Kortregt) Cutright
Hendrick Henry Hendricksen Henry Cutright (Kortregt)
Hendrick Henry (Kortregt) Cutright
Hendrick Henry Cutright
Hendrick Henry Kortregt
Hendrick Henry Kortregt Cutright
Hendrick Henry Cutright Kortregt
not just The One version currently listed in the About.
In the one and only Document so far added, the name is is spelled - "Hendreck Kortreght" -
the "h" between the 'g' and the 't' is clearly there
the 'e' before the 'ck' in Hendreck' -- might possibly be questioned since it is a bit narrower than most of the'e's -- but the loop is fatter than in any of the 'i's - and all the other 'i's have a clear dot above them
BUT - the Citation for the Source -- instead of correctly reporting what is in that Document, instead claims it has "Hendrick Kortregt"
Lois,
I have not had a chance to study the document, thank you for pointing out the handwriting possibilities.
As a practice, I put spelling variants in the AKA field (comma separated). I do not, as a practice, preserve all the variant spellings from merges in the profile "overview." They are viewable through revisions, as you did do.
