Actually there's a good bit of question about that. He seems to have some fairly strong Armenian associations (the name has more of an Armenian flavor than anything else), and while he undoubtedly passed himself off as the son of Athanagild II to make himself more acceptable to the local Spanish population, that doesn't necessarily mean that Athanagild *was* his father.
As I recall, Athanagild II got run out of Spain in one of the chronic civil wars of the time, and took refuge in Byzantium; and about a generation later the Emperor appointed this Ardabast character to go and rule whatever he could take and hold. The whole period is very messy and hard to follow.
