Hi everyone
Has there been enough test done to find out if Douwe was indeed his father?

I am not sure - and don't have documents too confirm - think June Barnes or Chris Steyn will know best - but I have it that my 7th great grandfather , Hermanus d'Oude Steyn, b1c3 is his Father ... something seems to be off here ... wrong links?

Dear Christelle,
The facts:
The Steyn progenitor, Douwe Gerbrandt Steyn (DGS) refers to Jacobus Steyn b1 as the 'voorzoon' of Maria Lozee. Thus DGS implies that somebody else is the father of Jacobus. Whether that is actually the case, is not yet possible to determine.

What is needed?

1. Genetic DNA tests to be done by biological descendants of DGS. There are two possibilities here:
First, descendants of Age, the biological son of DGS who did not come to South Africa. I have been able to trace four generations of descendants, but not up to our time.
Second, descendants of the brothers and sisters of DGS. They all remained in the Netherlands. Have been doing my best to get their info on to Geni as well. If you use HistoryLink to make a descendant graph of Gerben Jacobs, the biological father of DGS you will see an overview. Still, not descendants to our time found thus far. So I could not approach them for DNA tests.

2. Enough genetic DNA tests done by other South Africans. It might become clear that all the descendants of Mr XX have exactly the same DNA as the descendants of Jacob us Steyn b1. Well, that will be a major surprise.

My theory is that Jacobus b1 is actually the biological son of DGS but that he did not want to admit that because of the scandal it would have been. Jacobus b1 does inherit a full portion from DGS, the same portion a biological son would have received.

What can we do in the meantime? See if we can find living descendants of Gerben Jacobs, the biological father of DGS. Lots of research still to be done... Once we have the living descendants we can do DNA tests.

The other puzzle is whether Maria Lozee was a slave or not. Lozee as a surname is still found in France and Belgium today. So she could have come from there. However, we have no record of a Lozee coming to South Africa. So more research needs to be done here as well. Last time I checked I could not find a living female linked to Maria, otherwise we could have asked them to do an mtDNA test. That will give us a much clearer idea about the origins of Maria.

Mooiloop

Dear Willa
Jacobus b1 had a son Hermanus b1c3. This Hermanus is the one known as Hermanus d'Oude. (the old one). The Old One had a son Hermanus, obviously known as Hermanus d'Jonge (the young one). The Young One was the President of Swellendam.
