I'm the 6th greatgrandaughter of Hannah and Larkin Chew. Family records in my possession say Hannah was the daughter of John Roy, Esq. of Carolina County, VA.

Most sources have her as the daughter of Richard Roy and I have also seen John Richard Roy. Does anybody have sources to support Hannah being the stepdaughter of John (or Richard) Roy rather than his natural daughter? I'd like to get the tree straight as it now has duplicate parents and incomplete data on Dorothy (Hannah's mother, if she was, in fact the step-daughter of John or Richard Roy).

I undid merges so we can start fresh with parents.

Hi, Erica. I've sent out inquiries to profile managers and to the "FSmith" who posted on the Ann Johnston (Chew) page you referred me to. I did not find anything else on Hannah there --or else I missed it. Please advise if there was anything else. Thanks.

We might be able to eliminate at least one of the Hannah Roy's by investigating the parents

Erica,
I think I've made some headway with this. According to this, Dorothy Buckner, daughter of Richard Buckner, was born in 1673 in Rappahannock County, married Charles Smith in 1700, then, after he died in 1710, married John Roy. She was NOT the mother of Hannah Roy. Her children were Robert Smith (from the first marriage), Thomas Roy, John Roy, Jr., Reuben Roy, Mungo Roy, Richard M Roy, Mary Roy, and Elizabeth Roy.

Dorothy Buckner's husband John Roy was the son of Richard Roy and Dorothy Peyton. I think we can see where the confusion with Buckner and Peyton in Hannah Roy’s line comes from. https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=xJZNCAAAQBAJ&pg=PT419&l...

I've posted on discussion pages and/or contacted profile managers and heard nothing back.

I think we need to make Hannah Roy's parents Richard (or John Richard) Roy and Agnes McGregor. We need to cut Elizabeth smith loose from the Chew tree. She was not Larkin's wife. We need to show Dorothy Peyton as the wife of Richard Roy and Dorothy Bruckner as the wife of John Guy Roy (who was Hannah Roy's brother.

I've tried to move and merge but continually get error messages. Can you assist?

BTW, to my knowledge, Ann Johnston (Chew), Larkin Chew, Jr., Thomas Chew, and John Chew were Larkin Sr. and Hannah Roy's only surviving children.

I'm getting there ...

Children of Richard Roy and Mary Marsh

3. Hannah Roy-b-abt. 1684-Va.-d-abt.-1694/1788 Married: abt.-1697 Larkin Chew-b-abt.-1675

Two different Dorothy Roy of different Generations smooshed together in trees. This is maddening. Also, apparently I'm related to the Buckners.

Anyway, Hannah Chew was not Hannah Smith. We got that far, although I'm questioning the parent placement.

------

The Jno. Roy and John Roy is her brother, I believe (aka John Guy Roy)

My theory is that

Richard Roy married 1) Mary Marsh 2) after 1711 Dorothy widow Smith

Both Charles Smith & Richard Roy had daughters named Hannah born around 1680 and both had brothers. If Hannah who married Larkin Chew had been a Smith, her witness would have been a Smith; that it was a Roy speaks to her full brother.

The adoption theory doesn't wash because the 2nd marriage wasn't until after 1711 and Hannah married about 1695.

The Abigail McGregor mother seems less likely again because of the brother's role.

However this argument could explain things if we see that Dorothy was her mother and not Mary.

"A record from Essex Cnty, Va, shows Dorothy (as) the mothe r of Hannah (and Dorothy) was married to Charles Smith befo re she married John Roy. Charles Smith died c1710 and Larki n Chew was an appraiser of the estate of Charles Smith. La rkin Chew also appears as witness on other records in conne ction with sale of property Dorothy and husband John Roy so ld as her dower rights and another power of attorney deed r egarding sale of the property. Since records indicate Hann ah was born c1675, she was daughter of Charles Smith and no t John Roy her mother's second husband."

And yet again, I'm wondering if it was Dorothy Buckner, wife of JOHN Roy, who was the widow of Charles Smith.

12 June 1719, After the death of Mr. Charles Smith of Essex County, Dorothy his widow (now the wife of Mr. John Roy) made choice of the planation where the said John and Dorothy now live with the tract of land thereto belonging , together with the plantation above Massaponnx Creek where John Henby then lived, bounded on the lower side according to a lease thereof to him made by Mr, Charles Taliafeffo, viz., by a red oak sapling to blazed by the river side and so across the old field into the woods to a stake in the woods by the fence then made between the said Henby and one John Sorrell, but the said choice was never ascertained by authentic writing or on record.

Yes, you are pretty much exactly where I am with this. The one question (for me) is that family records say Hannah was the daughter of John Roy, Esq. rather than Richard Roy. I have been thinking this might be explained by the John/John Richard/Richard confusion, but maybe not. The the letter I have from Joseph Chew (grandson of Larkin) says that Hannah Roy was the daughter of John Roy, Esq. of ANNAPOLIS, not Port Royal. (??)

I had not seen the Rootsweb link on Richard Roy and Mary Marsh. I think it is correct that Hannah's siblings were John Guy, William, Richard and James.

The whole mess may have started with the confusion between the Hannah, daughter of Dorothy who married John Roy after Charles Smith and Hannah the daughter of Mary Marsh and Richard Roy. I don't think the Hannah who married Larkin was born as early as 1675. Larkin's having been the appraiser for Charles Smith's estate may have led people to conflate the two Hannahs. The other funky bit is where does Agnes McGregor fit in? There are NO Agnes McGregors (nor Agnes Roys) on the Early Colonial Settlers site. Maybe that is where the problem starts.

Also found this on Dorothy: http://www.historicportroyal.net/project/the-dorothy-roy-chimneys/
And this, that supports Hannah being the daughter of John and Dorothy, "Born in St. Stephen’s Parish, King & Queen County, Virginia in 1698, Thomas Chew was the second but oldest surviving son of Larkin Chew (1676-1729) and Hannah Roy (1680-1734), daughter of John and Dorothy Roy of Port Royal, Virginia. Five children were born to Larkin and Hannah Roy Chew: Joseph (died young), Thomas, Ann, John and Larkin Jr."

In the Early Colonial Settlers surname list we find a Richard Peyton b. 1655 married to an Ann Buckner, with children Dorothy [Peyton] and Sarah [Peyton] b.1682. That suggests Dorothy Peyton was in the same generation as Hannah Roy, not Hannah’s parents’ generation. If there is a Peyton-Chew connection it is not via Hannah.

We also find a Dorothy Buckner b. bef. 1684 to Anthony Buckner and Sarah Ellis, married 1) Charles Smith and 2) John Roy. This suggests she, too, was in the same generation as Hannah. http://www.colonial-settlers-md-va.us/getperson.php?personID=I02424... Can’t see how Dorothy [Buckner] Roy could possibly have been Hannah’s mother. If there is any documentary evidence for a Hannah Roy having been born late enough to have been Dorothy’s daughter, I haven’t seen it. Moreover, as we know Hannah married Larkin in Dec. 1696, putting her birth date right around 1680-86, which agrees with most records I have seen. On the other hand, it’s hard to see how Dorothy Buckner could be Anthony and Sarah’s daughter. Sarah would have been in her 50s when Dorothy was born! http://www.colonial-settlers-md-va.us/getperson.php?personID=I02464... It seems more likely the Dorothy Buckner who married Charles Smith was Anthony and Sarah’s granddaughter via their son Richard. http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=dotsi...

I agree that John Roy seems to have been Hannah’s brother, not father. The documentary evidence seem to fall on the side of Hannah being Richard Roy’s daughter. Is there a citation for the Essex City, VA. mention of Hannah being Dorothy’s daughter (that you posted at 3:10 and 3:14 a.m.)? That seems to be the outlier here.

No clue how to find that citation for Hannah's mother. Grrr.

In the Carter family history the paragraph on Larkin Chew has Hannah as daughter of JOHN Roy. This might be one of the ways the confusion spread.

http://https://www.geni.com/documents/view?doc_id=60000000692445848...; isn't citing records but it's a good read on the John Roy family from (what should be) a careful contemporary interpretation by a historic society.

Sorry the 1st doc didn't take well, here's the "live link" and I'm uploading again

https://archive.org/stream/descendantsofcap00mill#page/n763/mode/2up

Just checked the tree and see it looks much cleaner. The one hangover is Dorothy Peyton being married to Richard Roy, although of a different generation. There is also evidence Dorothy Peyton was Charles Smith's wife. Dorothy Smith I will let the Buckner and Peyton people work this part out!

I found where that bit about Hannah being Dorothy's daughter, but it's really just and inference, no documents. Will try to find it again.

The second link(on John Roy family) gives me an error message. I got the Carter history, though. Thanks.

I'm wondering about whether there were more than two Charles Smiths (besides the one b. 1655 and the son shown as being b. 1697). We're missing something.

And some time traveling ?

- Dorothy Bruckner could not have had children with Charles Smith born in the 1680s. She didn't marry John Roy until 1719 and had a full family and a business career after that. She was born in the 1680s like her 2nd husband and his sister & had perhaps the one child with her 1st

- so yes, Charles smith had a 1st family, and we should look at dorothy Peyton for it

- if they had a child Hannah Smith that could explain the Hannah Smith / Hannah Roy mixup, as his 2nd wife became Dorothy (Bruckner) (Smith) Roy - stepmother to Hannah Smith

Founding of Port Royal on page 3 - 4 great story about Dorothy Bruckner

Possibly Error about Hugh Roy, he was transported to the colony about 1654 I think. However who seems to have been his wife Dorothy (sigh) was transported in 1653 ...

Also this: Robert Smith

The Buckner book has the marriage and death date for Dorothy Buckner

https://books.google.com/books?id=vXtNCAAAQBAJ&lpg=PT433&ot...

The death date for Dorothy Peyton is usually seen as the death date for Buckner. Oooooohhhh.

I don't really doubt though that Peyton married Charles Smith. The name Dorothy Peyton Smith is repeated in her daughter and more.

So he married both.

Dorothy Roy

Married
1) Capt. Charles Smith his 1st wife Dorothy Smith
2) John Guy Roy, Sr.

So Hannah Smith was Dorothy's daughter, just wrong Dorothy.

Hannah Roy was perhaps the daughter of Mary Marsh but so far I don't see a record.

I think we did great! Sorted a confusion since the 1880s. Thank you so much for your efforts and introducing me to new relatives (if it's true, my side).

Yes, thanks for all your help! Now I'll have to see how we're connected. LOL

Im connecting from a few directions

Will have to walk through

Final note: Would like to cut Jane as daughter of Larkin and Hannah loose. No evidence anywhere they had a daughter Jane. I've written to the profile manager and gotten no response.

Yes, that is done. Had the reference her parents are unknown on the husband's profile but not hers.
