Dirk Coetzee (Coetzier), born circa 1655, arrived in De Caap de Goede Hoop, from Holland, taking charge of the Military of the Caap and based in the Castle of Good Hope.
As an expression of appreciation,Commander Dirk Coetzee,was presented with a farm in the Stellenbosch area, against the slopes of the mountain of Stellenbosch. Dirk Coetzee named his farm Coetzee-zijn-berg, later to become the famous Coetzenberg, where today, the Stellenbosch University and sport grounds are situated

The ceremonial sable (sabre) of Commander Dirk Coetzee, was handed down through generations of Coetzee (first born son, normally inherited, till last ownership landed with young Hendrik Jacobus Bekker, (his Mother Tienkie Coetzee).
