I'm a little confused as to why Mary Gifford - if her maiden name was Soule - had a sister with the first name. Was Many Soule Shrieve the same woman as Mary Gifford and was married twice? Or was Mary Gifford not a member of the Soule family? ANd when and where were Mary and Stephen Gifford married?

Mary Gifford married Stephen Gifford in 1710 according to notes here https://www.genealogy.com/ftm/p/e/p/Timothy-J-Pepitone/WEBSITE-0001...

I don’t see notes for Mary Shrieve

But the tree has her marrying in 1714

There is a Gifford / Soule connection in the next generation

Sarah [Wheaton] Tibbetts has been moved to daughter of George Soule, II & Deborah Soule

Tagging Hatte Blejer for an additional check, if you would be so kind.

In regards to Mary, the wife of Stephen Gifford

I cannot find any reference to her parents in records.

Skeeter Wesinger if you have a record, please link
it. User trees not acceptable evidence.

The Mayflower books teach that Nathaniel Soule had three daughters, "Unlikely they were legitimate daughters." Mary, Susannah, and Sarah. He also charged his wife with Adultery. If you want to create another, in this case a phony husband that's your call. I see nothing that says Mary was Mary Shrieve. You should make a note: That use of the line will probably not result in being admitted to the Mayflower society.

Where would you like me to put this information?

Agreed about Mary Shrieve, she has been detached from parents. Sarah Soule has been moved to the correct parents. Susannah Oliver later Lisbe is now parents unknown as well.

What is the evidence to support Mary Gifford as a Soule?

The fact that they use -- as Mary's last name is clear evidence they know who she is.....

I suppose this isn't France where there isn't any difference between illegitimate and legitimate children and there is no evidence that three were all illegitimate either. Just like the Wilcox children.

In genealogy reports there are different conventions to show a maiden name as unknown. I use “unknown” in Geni profiles for clarification, but I often see Mary - - in printed reports. Also Mary ??, Mary [?], Mary ., Mary LNU (last name unknown), N.N. (Nomen nescio: see https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nomen_nescio ). Or just plain Mary. So to see “Mary - -

(Continuing)

does not mean they know and they’re not saying to avoid scandal. Lots of Mary’s without known parents at this time & place.

Is there a discussion about the possibility Mary, wife of Stephen Gifford, was a Soule you’re looking at? Certainly it seems the Soules and Giffords were collateral families.

Geez take my head off why don't you.

Sorry ! I’m learning about these families and I don’t understand the claim about Mary Gifford’s parents.

I’m reviewing the timeline for Nathaniel’s adultery punishments. If Mary Gifford married about 1710, doesn’t that suggest a later birth date than the 1674 (oops caught). ?

I have 6 Mayflower approved ancestors with Francis Cooke in process. If Mary Gifford was a Soule then that would make another. I've been trying to make this Mayflower approvable connection for several years but have been unable to. Thus I'd love a provable connection. I'm now going to investigate Stephen Hopkins.
