Fugate Forum: Josiah's son John was apparently his oldest son, since named first in estate records.

John Zachariah married first Eleanor Morgan and second Sarah Henley.... by Sarah he had son Benjamin Fugate that married Hannah Devers, Zachariah that married Unity Devers, Colbert Fugate that married Hannah Tate, Henley Fugate that married Rachel Croxdale, Nancy/Ann Fugate that married Samuel Haddix and Francis Fugate that married Nancy Agnes Georges.

I am very happy to hear from you cousin! I have a lot of info from Nancy Ann Fugit/Fugitt/Fugate's Bible. She spelled it Fugitt but the spelling was changed in the Clay County KY courthouse in the late 1790's/early 1800's to Fugate. (The area now Breathitt County KY was first part of Floyd County, then Clay County, then Perry County and finally Breathitt County. So the area our ancestors lived in was at the now Breathitt County/Perry County borders encompassing Lost Creek and Troublesome Creeks. They did branch out in the 1800's to other parts of Breathitt and Perry Counties.
Nancy Ann's father was John Zachariah Fugitt and her mother was Sarah Henley. John Zachariah's father was Josiah Fugitt and his mother was Mary E. Martin. Josiah's father was James Lawton Fugitt and his mother was Dorothy Pettis. James Lawton's father was Peter Fugitt and his mother was Armelies Lawton. Peter Fugitt immigrated from France.
(Fr. Philip says: a discussion with Bill Deyo, the genealogist and tribal historian for the Patawomeck Tribe, has Mr. Deyo believing that Peter Fugate was not the Father of James L. Fugate, but a 1/2 brother. There are depositions in the records of Virginia that show James Fugate's father to be James Fugate and Ameline Lambe....we speculate that Armelies Lawton is a corruption of Ameline Lambe).
They were from Yarmouth, Isle of Wight, England which was a have for French Huguenots who settled in England and later America. The Fugate family were probably Huguenot and Peter could indeed have been born in France while his brothers were from England and emigrated to America from there).
