So, what does the consensus say?

You can find this bit, within the "about" tab section, of Johan Wendel's profile.

"DNA Evidence: In spite of very persistent "legends" that Johann Wendel Georg TRAUT was the son of Hans Velton TRAUT (circa 1645 - after 1689), extensive Y-DNA testing at the 37-marker level of fully-proven descendants from both lines indicates this absolutely cannot be true. While Johann Wendel Georg TRAUT is from Y-DNA Haplogroup "R-M269" (formerly known as Hg “R1b1b2” – the modal haplogroup for Europe), Hans Velton TRAUT and his descending lines are from Haplogroup "J-M172" (formerly known as Hg "J2"), which tends to find it’s deep ancestral origins in the Fertile Crescent, to include among Sephardic Jews. This fully-documented genetic information for proven descendants of both lines has been triple-validated. Hans Velton TRAUT being of possible Jewish descent is perhaps entirely consistent with nearby Landau being an active enclave of the Jewish merchant class at that time.

It seems to be replacing one alleged legend with another. I see no citations for this referenced research, and more importantly, we can't assume someone was Jewish based on a haplogroup. As Craig Trout noted, J-M172 "includes" Sephardim; it isn't exclusive to them.

I would keep pursuing records.

True that, It doesn’t indicate that he was Jewish, but it does indicate he wasn't Johann Wendel's father. As they would have to have the same or a very near mutated variant of the same Y designation, at the very least.

I curated this profile by request. I don't think the DNA stuff should be in the About Section. What do you think about consolidating the DNA stuff in a text document and locking the About Section to confine the data to non DNA info? A reference to the DNA "document" can be made in the about section, and request made to keep that stuff in discussions. Open to ideas...

The Traut's are a German allied family of the Braun/Brown family .... like Braun/Brown family the Lutherans largely stayed in central Pennsylvania and the Moravians migrated south of the Stokes/Rowan/Davidson counties in North Carolina.

You would like find similar DNA make ups with the Clodfelter/Glattfelder, Motsinger/Motzinger, Sink/Zink families .... and Sephardic Jewish DNA wouldn't be a surprise to me.

NOTE: DNA is NOT my strong area.

Jess, I think it's worth preserving a mention -- if citable -- that Y-DNA has disproven Hans Velton Traut as the father. But the whole thing about Hans Velton possibly being Sephardic is both irrelevant and speculative, so it should be removed.

It seems from parts of the "About" that no parents are known, so some cutting and locking may also be necessary?

There's also a sales pitch for book orders in there that could come out...

OK, I edited it and put the deleted material in a document under Sources. Please check.
