===Disputed Origins

From https://ballardofvirginia.com/about/the-children-of-thomas-ballard-...

Thomas, born c. 1695. Likely the Thomas Ballard of York County who took a patent on 28 September 1728 for 330 acres of new land in Spotylsvania County in St. George’s Parish, on the North side of the Northanna River & on the South side of the Main Road; adjacent Mr. Augustin Moore, in the County line. Patent Book No. 13, p. 452. It’s worth noting that the very next patent recorded after this one was by a “William Smith, Jr” of Spotylvania County, who may have been a relation of Elizabeth Ballard’s husband. There is no mention of him in the Spotylvania County records before or after 1728, which suggests that the land was never seated.

Thomas is believed by some researchers to have married (1) Mary Dancy, the daughter of Francis and Amy Dancy, and (2) Elizabeth _, and removed to Charles City county. This compiler disagrees, and believes that this Thomas likely predeceased his brothers without issue, and that the Thomas Ballard who married Mary Dancy is the son of William Ballard of Charles City County, Virginia (c. 1668-c. 1725).

Sorry-- regarding the topic heading, I assumed was Thomas's parentage that is the topic of discussion

Yes, that’s what I had in mind. Have you looked into the claim that parents are reported incorrectly?

William Ballard of Charles City County, Virginia (c.1668-c.1725).

Very little is known of William Ballard, the youngest son of Thomas Ballard of James City county.

William Ballard and Elizabeth _________ had issue:

1. THOMAS, married Mary Dancy.

2. Francis, born c. 1705, died before 7 June 1727. He figures in the records of Charles City county on three occasions, one a lawsuit, the two others regarding the administration of his estate by his brother, Thomas ..

3. Rebecca, living in 1726. Possibly the Rebecca identified as the wife of William Sherman of New Kent County, ...

4. Anna, living in 1726. Perhaps married Henry Talman. ...

5. JOHN, married Faitha Edmunds.

6. Elizabeth, married William Firth.

7. WILLIAM, likely married Elizabeth Clopton.

8. Martha, a minor in 1726, was probably born c. 1711

I believe they suggest this William Ballard as Thomas’s father

William Ballard, of Charles City

And his mother was Elizabeth.

From https://ballardofvirginia.com/about/william-ballard-of-charles-city...

Mrs Elizabeth Ballard made her will naming her sister Sarah Soane & brother in law, Henry Soane.

Somewhere upline of him will be a "person of color" because he is listed in the tithables

The image file is 1762 in South Carolina.

This Thomas Ballard was dead by 1754 in Virginia.

Lots of Ballard’s ...

Then I will remove it. Misplaced it in the line.

I’m moving over this Thomas to what the Ballard researchers have so your path may change. Can you work on John Ballard of Mecklenburg?

Erica Howton logging off shortly...rough day of online genealogy. Very taxing and I am trying to just ROLL WITH IT

Erica Howton just remember please that the paper and the DNA are sometimes two different sides of a coin which has either faded or was never struck on one side. I work based off of DNA when I can. It has been almost 100% of my focus this past nearly two years since I DNA tested.
Today I am feeling pretty beat up over some of my lines that are DNA confirmed because it causes me to be ridiculed and unable to work on collaborative trees... I have made my Ancestry tree private for the first time.

Erica Howton do what you think/feel is best/correct. I will work on it later. I am happy for the profiles to be scrutinized and confirmed as much as is possible.
Thank you.
~Cynthia

Well, it’s not much of a difference at the level of tree I can help with. But I don’t have sources for his descent, so over to you on that. North Carolina genealogy is very difficult.

John Ballard, of Mecklenburg Co. Was off a generation. The Ballard compiler has him as the son of William & Elizabeth.

Now we have an issue with parents for Captain William Ballard

Hatte Blejer The DNA evidence does not seem to support his parents; and James Branch Cabell (noted amateur genealogist & exquisite novelist) had identified this William Ballard, of York County as the son of Catherine Hubbard.

I’ve disconnected & locked relationships to no parents.

Actually a case is made for the William Ballard who married Philadelphia Leas being a son of Thomas Ballard & Ann Thomas here:

Katherine Hubbard

For those who want to try parsing it out, the Y DNA project for Ballard is here:

The note from https://ballardofvirginia.com/about/

The reader should note that two different Lineage Groups claim descent from Thomas Ballard of James City County, Virginia. We know from yDNA testing that this is not possible; one or the other groups (Lineage Group I or Lineage Group III) may very well descend from him, but participants in the Ballard DNA Project have not found sufficient proof (to the satisfaction of this compiler) to make a definitive judgment. Participants in both groups claim kinship by way of a son, William Ballard, who they say settled in Essex County; this compiler believes the evidence shows that his son William made his home in that part of James City County that was cut off from James City County and made part of Charles City County in 1721, and died there. What is needed is a participant with a well documented genealogy who descends from one of Thomas’ other sons. To date, none have presented themselves, and until one does, Thomas Ballard of James City County and his descendants will stand apart from all of the Lineage Groups documented on this site.

Cynthia you’re from John of Mecklenburg & he does “not” seem controversial. As said, he had drifted off a generation, but that was easily fixed based on profile notes.

Ok. Thank you Erica Howton...thinking some are names I have to UNremember...I removed myself as manager and UNfollowed a few profiles.
I am still wondering where the tithable pic goes at this point...

1762 in Cheraw SC is way out of my comfort zone ....
