"Managers of Valentine Allen,

I am contacting you about this profile: Valentine Allen, of Old Rappahannock
It is marked as Master Profile. It states John Allen III and Catherine Mayor are the parents of Valentine Allen. They seem to be the parents every site gives.

However, Ancestry.com lists
Early Virginia Immigrants, 1623-1666
Valentine Allen 1650 by John Catlett and Ralph Rousey

Virginia, Compiled Marriages, 1660-1800
Name: John Allen
Spouse: Catherine Major
Marriage Date: 15 Nov 1678
Marriage Location: Richmond County, Virginia

Wikitree states John and Catherine married 1629 in Virginia. That date is at least before the date of birth for Valentine, but they got married in Virginia, and Valentine was born in England.

If John married Catherine 1678 in Virginia, and Valentine was born abt 1630 and Valentine came to Virginia in 1650, how can Valentine be the son of John and Catherine?
Have I got my people confused?

Sincerely,

dale scott

Angus Wood-Salomon just started reading the Pioneers blog but already it looks to me like we have another Allen cluster to be broken apart.

“Tracing Valentine Allen’s descendants in Rappahannock shows he had no surviving male line that could later be used in comparing his DNA to William’s. Samuel Allen was identified as Valentine’s son in the will of Thomas Page.12 But Samuel died childless, leaving his sisters, Mary Brown and Christian Dyson, as his only heirs..”

—-

Valentine who married Mary Page (daughter of Thomas Page) is the brother of William of New Kent who married Sarah Holt (daughter of Robert Holt).

—-

“ Seven years later William and Valentine entered their own patents. They did this at the same time. This suggests two things: it may have been the time of death for their father and/or it marks the time when the two of them married. William’s patent, as shown above was entered in June of 1657. Valentine’s patent was entered in September of the same year. Unlike William, however, Valentine chose to go north to [old] Rappahannock County.”

Agreed so far?

“ William and Valentine also must have had a younger brother Robert Allen. His headright is also found in the records suggesting he came or returned to Virginia, although not until a few years after William and Valentine. ”

Can we tag these three brother Allen’s?

“ Because of a DNA connection between some of Richard Allen’s and Reynolds Allen’s descendants coming from New Kent County, Robert is thought to be Reynolds’s father. This works well with a record showing the Reynolds family arriving in New Kent just after Robert returned from England. In the Reynolds family there were a number of females listed as headrights for Thomas Ballard14, so it is not clear which Reynolds daughter Robert married, but having a son named Reynolds clearly suggests he married one of them.”

Bingo.

“ The father of William, Valentine and Robert Allen was named William Allen. He was a resident of James City County as early as 1639. Even at that time, he was associated with Robert Holt. Since this older William Allen did not enter any patents of his own, it is assumed he did not farm or need to grow crops for a living and therefore worked for Robert Holt, the merchant, in some capacity. He often crossed the ocean going from England to Virginia. One of William’s headrights coming from his own travels abroad can be found within Holt’s earliest patent in Virginia.”

“ William Allen and wife Joan Allen most likely grew up as neighbors in the Aylesbury Vale. The parish of Grendon Underwood, where they married, is next to the parish of Edgcott where William’s father Valentine Allen married William’s mother Agnes Clarke. ”

So we have so far:

1. Valentine Allen + Agnes Clarke
2. William Allen + Joan Allen: at least 3 children:
3. Valentine Allen of Rappahannock + Mary Page
... 4. Samuel Allen
3. William Allen of New Kent + Sarah Holt
3. Robert Allen + daughter Reynolds
... Reynolds Allen

This is the Richard Allen + wife Elizabeth described in the blog as “Gen 1”

Richard Allen of New Kent & Elizabeth Allen

He would be Valentine’s nephew (if the Geni tree were correct)

I do not so far find mother Sarah Holt (daughter of Robert)

Allin, William 1638, by Robt. Holt and Richard Bell, James City Co

Allen, Valentine, 1650, by John Catlett and Ralph Rousey, Co.(blank)

I’ve annotated a list of children in the profile of Valentine Allen, of Old Rappahannock

Created parent profiles:

William Allen of James City & Joan Allen

Their children:
Valentine Allen, of Old Rappahannock married Mary Page

William Allen II of New Kent Married Sarah Holt, parents of Richard Allen of New Kent

Robert Allen Married a daughter Reynolds, parents of Reynolds Allen

See how that flies.

You people did quite a bit of research . Thanks for working this out for me.

dale scott Which line do you descend from? Now that it seems Valentine “daughtered out.”

There is an Allen (Alleyne) line from England that has been using Reynold as a given name dating back to cir 1609. This line has YDNA ties to descendants currently in England as well as Virginia and North Carolina and Maryland.

See: R Subgroup e Rev Dr Richard Alleyn b 1572 d 1651 England
Allen YDNA Project: https://www.familytreedna.com/public/Allan?iframe=ycolorized

Rev Richard Alleyne had a son name Reynold Alleyne b cir 1609 that settled in Barbados. We also know this given name has been used by descendants of Rev Richard's family for over 150 years.
