Trying to sort out my Landis grandfathers and do not understand why the last name here is spelled this way "Landes" and not "Landis". After reading the previous discussion and all the hard work that has been done researching this (THANK YOU ALL!) , I know it is likely not just a typo. However I don't see "Landes" in the chart provided or most of the sources connected here and this name is referenced as "Landis" several times in that previous discussion. Help Please!

As many early profiles, at this time we do not have documentation about the original German spelling. We do know it was "Americanized", translated, or pronounced as Landis. So you will see that spelling on many trees and information from United States.

Literacy and record keeping were not the same as they are today. If records are found, it is highly probable to see different spellings on various documents.

I have encountered this numerous times for Swiss/German ancestors; including my own surname. I have seen at least three spellings on documents and he signed the ship registry with an "X". People that want "THE" spelling often have to settle for the spellings. It is one of the reasons for providing an "also known as" field.

The reason the "e" is used on this profile, is the only document that I have seen is a possible marriage certificate which uses an "e"..

Thank you very much for replying so quickly and clarifying this further. It sounded to me from the previous discussion that the Hirzel Chart was the best source or basis for confirming items like this. I only see his name as "Landis" on there and all his children and father have "Landis" as last name. Seems logical to make his last name "Landis" as well for congruence, no? I trust your response 100% as you are an expert and I am just a novice at this...though a fascinated and determined one. I am also doing my tree on Family Search, which I like, but the records on that site seem to get duplicated and muddled quite a bit.
