This merge brought in a father:

Are the sources currently in the curated profile enough to warrant considering adding parents?/father?
Thank you in advance.

Don Darrell Reid #MA447440C1, this is your line. DNA? Etc?

6/20/2020 at 10:50 AM

Yes he is my 5th Great Grandfather. Mary his wife, is my 5th Great Grandmother. Her line continues. His line does not.
His father is James Freeman, son of John Jr. and Unknown first wife.
John Jr. , father is John Freeman, Sr. of Norfolk Virginia and his wife, Hannah Horne.

Coming back to the parents of David Freeman, Don Darrell Reid #MA447440C1 directed my attention to the above link.

I am not an expert in North Carolina or Virginia or in this family, so Don will have to explain the issue, but he has stated the following in David Freeman's overview:

Despite Find A Grave and various Internet sites, there is nothing to connect this Freeman family with the Bertie Co., North Carolina family and David is never listed among the five children of Tabitha Hoyter and [John Freeman, of Chowan NC John Freeman, of Chowan, NC]

1/24/2021 at 7:34 PM

I am confused, however, since the Freeman table in the above link gives dates and locations that match those of the John Freeman, of Chowan NC family.

Don Darrell Reid #MA447440C1 - can you clarify in this discussion, so that David Freeman is not again connected with the Chowan, NC family? Thank you.

I am not an expert! My own main website is MyHeritage.com because it allows me to have absolute control of my family tree. As far as I know, David Freeman Sr. (1742-1808) was married to Mary Polly Frizzell (1743-1779). They are my 4th great-grandparents. Among their 9 or so children is my 3rd great-grandmother, Jemimah Freeman Stinson who is named in her father David’s will. I do NOT believe Tabitha Hoyter Freeman is part of my family tree. I only mention her because her name keeps appearing. The difficulty is there were many Freemans living in NC having the names of John & James. The only relevant John Freeman (1685-1732) in my tree is my possible 7 generations uncle born in Norfolk, Va & died in Chowan/Bertie, NC. The 2nd John Freeman of interest is from Chowan/Bertie, NC (1709?-1776?) and might possibly be David Freeman’s father. I’m guessing his mother is Anna Speight Freeman (1715-1777). That’s it! I have received an excessive numbers of emails recently concerning the Freemans and have nothing more to offer.

Martha Powers, try the UNFOLLOW at the right near the top of the page. Also, you are likely getting this because you are a manager... it can be an inconvenience to have a lot of posts coming into your personal email. Sorry.

Hello everyone. I am David Freeman. I am a member of the Freeman DNA project at FTDNA. Myself and all of my Y-DNA matches are in the John Freeman of Norfolk Virginia group. We have the haplogroup R-A2150 not haplogroup Q.

Hatte Blejer on hiatus I believe that Don is saying David Freeman is the son of James Freeman, of Bertie County and that James was the son of John Freeman, Chowanoke YDNA QM3

That is what the book John Freeman of Norfolk County, Virginia says.

The tree is really messed up right now and needs some serious straightening out.

My 6th great grandfather William Freeman, of Missouri is the brother of David Freeman. I have been trying to get that straightened out as well.

Tabitha Hoyter married John Freeman, of Chowan NC

One John is called of Chowan. The other is called John Chowanoke.

If anybody would like me to look up anything in the book for them feel free to ask.

I'll also add that the book only lists 6 children for David Freeman : Michael, Reuben, James, Sarah, Ann, Jemimah.

It also states that it wasn't possible to find a surname for Mary Freeman

And, that in his will David also mentions a wife Jean (not Jane) and a stepdaughter Elizabeth Hayes.

Finally I’d like to say that the above link that has been discussed is quite confusing.

The only person to my knowledge who claims descent from Rueben Freeman in the DNA project is a person who is in the R-M269 undefined group.

On top of that the link also uses the book and the research of Mosher when it finds it useful for it’s hypothesis. But, it then states that it’s aim is proving that John Freeman of Norfolk was really the son of Major Bridges Freeman. Which is exactly what Mosher was trying to disprove.

It also basis the foundation of its theory on some autosomal results which it shows zero proof of.

The book also also says that Mary Freeman who was a great granddaughter of John Freeman, of Norfolk VA was married to a man named Mr. Ward. The book has no mention of a Mary Freeman marring a David Freeman.

And since MY Freeman is from Bridges Freeman, I too know that the Y haplo group is different from the two and three other Freeman lines mentioned above.

I thought you would find that interesting Cynthia!

David Freeman also has the above link on his profile. That link tries to say that David was a brother to Allen Freeman of Mecklenburg N.C..

There is only 1 Allen Freeman in the book by Mosher. That Allen Freeman it is concluded is not a member of the John of Norfolk family and also not a brother of David or a son of James.

Beautiful!

It should also be noted that Mosher could have been incorrect in connecting this particular David Freeman with the John of Norfolk family via his presumed father James Freeman, of Bertie County.

The David Freeman who is buried in Steele Creek Cemetery in Mecklenburg is surrounded by many other people with the surname Freeman including the Allen Freeman that Mosher concluded was not a member of John of Norfolks family. Mosher did compare the signature of a David Freeman of Bertie County with the signature of David who died in Mecklenburg. She concluded that they were the same man based on the matching signature. However, it is still possible that the man whose signature she viewed was not actually related to John of Norfolk but was actually kin to Allen of Mecklenburg.

It's also possible that Allen and David were descendants of John of Norfolk. I'm not aware of any of their direct male descendants testing Y-DNA though. Certainly none of their descendants are in the John of Norfolk group at the DNA project though.

1/27/2021 at 2:47 PM

And it appears NONE of the Q Freemans are on Geni yet with the Y attached.....
I am working on adding my sister who just tested and it is NOT easy so cudos to everyone who has and will do it, especially the Y for males.

It would also be extremely strange for the direct male descendants of a man who received a land patent for the importation of himself into the country to have a Native American haplogroup Q y chromosome.

Either David Freeman is related John of Norfolk or he is related to a different family that was kin to Allen of Mecklenburg.

If David who died in Mecklenburg and Allen of Mecklenburg are related to John of Norfolk then it needs to be further proven with documentation and if possible DNA—preferably Y-DNA.

Mary Freeman needs to be proven to have actually married David Freeman?through=6000000001322191260 as that particular Mary is identified by the book as having married a Mr. Ward.

This is the note about Mary Freeman on page 39 of the book John Freeman of Norfolk Virginia by Merrill Hill Mosher:

"Weynette Parks Haun, Bertie County, North Carolina, County Court Minutes (Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions) 1788 thru 1792 (Durham: By the author, 1984): 4. Mary Ward, widow of Philip Ward petitioned for dower in February 1788. A James ward is also a very close associate of the Bertie County siblings of Mary Ward."

Mosher was of the opinion that Mary (of <William<William<John of Norfolk) was still alive, living in Bertie County not Mecklenburg, and a dower of Mr. Ward in 1788. Not that she died in 1779 and was buried in Steele Creek Presbyterian ChurchCemetery in Mecklenburg.

Private User, make sure you add info to each profile as you work on them. Sources and a good and correct bio are really important

Can I add a source by using a quote from the book like my last post?

I don't know how much of the sources Mosher used are accessible for me to link with online.

1/27/2021 at 6:25 PM

There are several ways to do it.... from the About, from the Sources and from Documents. Even from the Discussion under the profile tab
