Private User has found this for us:

i've just uploaded a tasty record to this profile (under media) that hadn't made it's way onto geni yet:

Jan Steenkamp, on December 25 1706 in the service of the Dutch East India Company:

the original to view on:
https://www.nationaalarchief.nl/onderzoeken/archief/1.04.02/invnr/5...

This is jan steenkamp's soldier's record from his signing up in 1706 to his death on or before 22 march 1744 - also showing his resignation on 3 july 1714 (a few months before his first marriage).

see also:
https://www.openarch.nl/ghn:f4d24214-8875-4a9a-bc1a-b0a2cc8547a3/en for a schematic and other ship departure / arrival details.

i haven't edited the profile to include these facts - would rather leave that up to a manager / curator!

there are probably similar records for other soldiers who enlisted with the company and are progenitors - this is the first i've come across.

keep well, jo

Volgens Pama I was hy van Nieuwkerk afkomstig

.He came to South Africa from the village of NIEUWKERK, but whether the Dutch or Belgian Nieuwkerk is not clear.

On 4 April 1715 he became the owner of the farm "Het Slot" (The Castle) of Paardeberg, district Drakenstein.

All the Steenkamps of South Africa are descended from one of his five sons Johannes Harmen, Casper, Lucas, Wilhelm or Gerrit.

The other three sons died childless.

Of the only daughter Anna we know nothing except, (intriguingly!) that she was murdered on the frontier by Bushmen.

Jan was the progenitor (stamvader) of the Steenkamp family in South Africa.

On 4 April 1715 he became the owner of the farm "Het Slot" (The Castle) of Paardeberg, district Drakenstein.

In 1725 he beat the slave Domingo to death.

His slaves complained to the Fiscal, but he was acquitted and the slaves were punished instead.

In 1729 another of his slaves, Hector, was brutally beaten and died. On this occassion he was convicted, but his sentence was light.

Volgens Pama I was hy van Nieuwkerk afkomstig.

Teen 1691 was daar net oor 'n duisend inwoners, plus ongeveer 400 slawe.

Jan and Gezina had vier kinders, die jongste 'n tweeling:

Jan Harmensz STEENKAMP had 14 kinders, die oudste vier by sy eerste vrou Gesina VISSER en nog tien by sy tweede vrou, Jannetje VAN ECK. Hulle het in die Drakenstein distrik gewoon.

Stoere werk, Ilse Suzette Anne Van Wieringen, (c1b1a).
