Maybe this is a silly question, but is there anything preventing anyone from writing a better biography?
First, save the old one as an attached document. I will do that for you.
Second, build a reference list.
Third, repeat the Vital statistics in the body of the “about” with a copy / paste of the profile data.
Fourth, use the “bio maker” in SmartCopy for the child list.
Fifth, find any interesting details of this life and times.
This is for all and any geni members to do.
I see Erica Howton wound up doing the work here, so thanks to her are in order.
One thing to always remember about the "About" Cleanup project is that we need to have at least as many profiles *leaving* the project as we do going into it in order for it to work. We used to try to keep the number of profiles in it under 100, and now I see we're close to 900. That means we need to work a lot harder at getting profiles out of it before we add more.
This year is the 10th anniversary of our "April Is for About Cleanup" drive. Maybe we should propose a 2021 edition and get the numbers down. I'll start a thread.
I really want to learn a good TEMPLATE and then I will work on some.
Thank you both, Erica Howton and Private User
I have discovered that I tend to stop reading if the About is messy... Whenever I have asked for assistance, I have been given good instruction and now feel very comfortable making a Document for the Gedcom mess (sorry, not meaning to be critical... lack of better word right now) and a Biography.
I know Erica and others have shared examples of how to write an About and I will get to it soon, I hope.
I admit to being a S L O W learner..... but once I "get it", I get it lol
I am always hopeful curated profiles and profiles with many many managers will be much cleaner and easier to read but they do tend to be more high traffic and unfortunately not all will clean up after...
Cynthia Curtis, A183502, US7875087 Learning is good, at any speed. :)
I agree with you that when they're cluttered and messy, it can be very overwhelming as a reader.
A few of us are trying to come up with some easy templates people can use for creating "About" sections, and some basic instructions on how to "clean" those sections.
In the meantime, if you see an "About" that looks good to you, open up the text editor and just kinda explore what the formatting looks like to see how you can accomplish the same thing. That's how I learned how to put together "About" sections many more years ago than I care to admit. :)
I'm glad you feel comfortable putting GEDCOM dumps into a document now! One thing I do is add a citation tag for the person's first and last name, so that the document shows up in the "Sources" tab. Otherwise, it gets mired in the "Media" tab and no one notices it.
I know that a year or two ago, I put together an example for you on how you can edit those GEDCOM dumps into something legible, but of course I can't find it now. Drat. I'll have to reinvent that wheel. :)
If you're looking for templates, here's a profile I've been working on for a few days, which I MPed because I think it's a decent example and I'm thinking I might use it as a teaching tool: Eva Norma Elsa (Baller) Smothers Furey
You can see my basic format:
1) Intro to the person -- birth, parents, pre-marriage life
2) Info on marriage(s) and child(ren) -- I try to keep multiple spouses separate, with the families in "clusters"
3) Any interesting stuff about their non-family life -- none in this case so far
4) Sources section
I try to put timeline events in chronological order (like where they were living during each census), and I try to clear up any points that might confuse future editors (like her two eldest children having her second husband's surname, or most of them living in scattered locations in 1935).
My "Sources" sections might look like they take a lot of time, but in reality thy are really easy since 90% of it is just copied and pasted from Ancestry, MyHeritage, or FamilySearch. The only real effort I put in is with the formatting, and even that's pretty easy now after a while of doing it.
I know you use FamilySearch and FindAGrave a lot, so those are super easy for building a "Sources" section -- they provide the citation for you, and you just have to paste it into Geni. Hooray!
Or for an example of a "short" bio, try Cpl. William James Furey
Nothing says you have to get as detailed as my first example! Start small, work up.
I know Erica has made several as well (suggested profiles/a project?... I keep these as a mental note/to-do list of things I want to go back to)
Also, there was a Geni user once whose profiles all looked the same but very organized and informative and I wondered her technique.
I will work on a profile soon that I think is complete and see if I can get it to snuff. Also, I will commit to cleaning up the NEXT messy About I see.
Private User I love the about for Eva Norma Elsa (Baller) Smothers Furey, thank you for posting it. Somehow you made it a dramatic opening!
The indented formatting on the sources made it super clear where each fact was coming from, and reminded me of a couple of other member “abouts” I’ve admired.
