Please look... does anyone have any sources?

Judge Henry Clay "Au Nuk Ka Tah" Cockrum is my 4th great grandfather and it is said his mother was Native American.
Loss of records in a courthouse fire has led to this long being a dead end line....
Thank you for any assistance.

I’ve just found a blog that may illuminate this line. It’s reading logically but I’m unsure of sources.

Judge Henry Clay "Au Nuk Ka Tah" Cockrum is not the son of Ann Cockrill & not a listed son of Maj. John Cockrill

https://52weeksbglenn.blogspot.com/2019/

“ Such a union was undoubtedly the reason behind my 7x Great Grandmothers marriage to John Y (Jessee) Cockerham. I am quite certain she had a name given to her by her parents, but in 1780 tribal births were not recorded. The name that I have found for her is Elizabeth. (And as side note they may have called her Alice). She and John Y lived on the banks of the Chattahoochee River and ran a Ferry service.

I found them in ECHOS(publication) 1982, Volume 27, a reprint. The Cherokee Treaty , July 18, 1817

" John Cockram (sic) in right of WIFE, southside of Chattahoochee River, near Shallow Ford, (Nov. 10) with Six in family.

——

The reference is that the Judge was given the Indian name as thanks for his work. The issue of his mother can be further explored, but we have a reference for the father. I think John Cockerham had smerged into Cockrum and then merged into the Major.

Cynthia Curtis, A183502, US7875087 - I’m pretty sure you will agree so I’m going ahead based on the blog, and will immediately send you management requests. Of course we can revert or whatever if you find otherwise.

This is actually an exciting find.

None of us are named Jesse! Jesse is in no way shape or form the father of Henry Cockrum of Randolph Co., AR. We will be Thomas's or look out beside Thomas & John Y. names. See those two free colored boys! The two may be Henry & Reyson B. Cockrum, half-brothers of the others wearing their feathers and squirrel tails. Free colored was Native American in KY during this time period. I go with Paris Lucretia Cockrum Jackson Dilbeck. My name is Annette and she was not 120 when she died as turned into LDS. May the Lord have mercy on us all. I'm sitting here with a legal copy of Mary Cockeram's 1824 marriage to Joshua Wright from Hardeman Co., TN I have had it for over ten years. The bond was signed by William Crossen. In 1997 Johnny C. Atwell purchased Delmar Crossens house from his widow Marvil on US #67 one mile north of MO/AR State line breaking our daily & weekly contacts. From at least 1824 (one hundred and seventy five years) we have been in almost daily contact with our Crossens cousins; living on joining property and never no farther than 2 miles apart. The era is ending people and we still can not get ourselves past 1820!

I do not recall the origin of the Notes but I have stacks of papers still put away and still hoping to recover the hard drive of my old laptop that died begore our last move-- around 2015

(I can tell you that much of my family STILL lives near that Hwy 61/67 which is the road that the former president William Blythe Clinton's father died. Arkansas will be further south a bit but same highway system)

Major John Y. Cockrum was merged into Maj. John Cockrill by Erica Howton.

so al of the HINTS/Smart matches on Maj. John Cockrill belong to John Y. “Jessee” Cochran
And the FAG memorial that the tombstone picture comes from has since been deleted so I wish we could find it in the way back machine even if there were errors

That really is a lovely blog:

What's LOVE got to do with it?
In our modern society, we are fascinated and ruled by the thought of Romantic Love.
Hearts, Flowers, Candy, Long walks in the moonlight.
But my Ancestors probably did not have that same luxury. The Ancestors in my tree had to scramble, work and starve as they eked out a life. The thought of Romantic Love probably never entered their minds.

As I have written about, my first Cockerham relative was married to a Cherokee woman in the late 1700's. Did he love her in that way? More than likely he needed a woman for several reasons; an ambassador to the tribal lands he wanted to explore, a work mate, a sex partner, someone to raise his children, tend his stock and mend his clothes. Was his wife in love with him? Or did she do as she was told by her parents or tribe? Did she regret hitching her life to his? There are no letters, diaries or family history to say either way. They raised several children together, and those children were successful, so I must imagine the union was successful as well.

Jimmy,

My research in the Hardeman County, Tennessee probate and estate records leads me to believe that Judge Henry Cockrum is not the son of John Y. Cockeram, but rather the son of Jesse Cockeram.Jesse and John Y. are probably brothers from western Kentucky.Almost certain is that John Y. Cockeram's father was a Henry Cockeram.

The Tennessee estate records do not contain any dispersal of assets for either John Y. or Jesse. There are records of the estate sales for both men.Henry Cockeram did not purchase anything at John Y's estate sale, but did purchase a number of items at Jesse's sale.

I know that this is not conclusive.

My descent from Judge Henry is to Henry C. Cockrum, to William Monroe Cockrum, to William Frank Cockrum/Cochran to Lowell F. Cochran, to me, Frank Cochran.

I am a Cochran descendant living in Tahlequah OK. We are registered Cherokees on both sides of my family. There is Cherokee blood in the Cochran line, but I am not sure where that starts. I see that many of my ancestors came from South Carolina even before the removal, so there is a good possibility that our European ancestors married Cherokees there.

Geni user Private informed me several years ago that he is not the same as

So imagine my excitement and confusion when Cockerell was merged
Tomorrow marks another anniversary of my father's passing. I adored him. Thank you so much for your work on this line.

So did we want to set up John Y & Jesse Cockeram as brothers, sons of Henry Cockeram? If his research is right, then Judge Henry should move over to Jesse, but wife Elizabeth stays with John Y. Does this make sense? Or just make the note for now? I think we should add Henry as the father regardless.

Here is a duplicate
Elizabeth Cockrum
Elizabeth Cockrum
from my DNA matches for Cockrum.

For me and many researchers I have run into, father of Judge Henry Clay Cockrum is either John Y or Jesse but the mother is ALWAYS a Native American woman

Descendants became Cockrum, Cochran, etc. but no Cockerill or Cottrill as far as I have seen

Which I think is why they called him "John Y "Jesse" Cockrum/Cockerham.

sorry----

John Y "Jesse" Cockrum

Merging done. We have the record of John Y & wife, it sounds like there are records of Jesse & Henry, but all we got so far is the discussion. Could be should name John Y “or” Jesse until more records turn up. But I’ll leave to you - the probable father profile helps a lot.

Erica Howton you are a blessing. I thank you so much for everything you have found and applied.
I think keeping him Joh Y "Jesse" is what most longtime researchers have sat on and I am ok with it too

What needs to happen to MP and lock them?

I used this curator note:

John Y. “Jessee” Cochran

Probably the son of a Henry Cockerham. Relationships are locked, but If additional children names are found, contact any curator to temporarily unlock / relock.

Wait a minute. Who’s this Henry Cockerham ? :)
