John Lee, of Goochland County was not the son of Thomas Lee, of Lancaster County & Ann Lee

According to research posted on https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/G9ZX-MG9

His Will seems to indicate sisters.

No Braxtons in Northampton County, VA. This appear to be the extent of the connection:

Lucius Chandler Saunders was born on 17 November 1860 at Northampton Co, VA.2
Marriage* circa 1895 He married Sarah 'Sallie' Moore Braxton, daughter of Carter Moore Braxton and Nannie Clementina Alsop, circa 1895.1 (Her parents were from mainside Virginia, not the Eastern Shore.)
Census head* 1900 Lucius was listed as a head of household in the census of 1900 at 3302 West Avenue, Newport News, Ward 6, Warwick Co, VA. HH#455 was headed by Lucius C. Saunders, a 38 year old "Agt Travs Partner Co". Listed with him were the following Saunders: Sallie B., a 25 year old wife; Sallie B., a 3 year old daughter; William C., a 2/12 year old son; Lu??is J., a 23 year old cousin; and Dianah Boyd, a 45 year old black widowed servant.3 (So apparently he left the Eastern Shore to live near *her* folks.)

John James Lee, Sr - or just John Lee, Sr - was this ancestors name -
tampering of name to John Lee of Goochland also causes confusion and compromises to user and program search matching and not an alternate.name as John Lee of Goochland has never been a reference to him historically.

(PLEASE USE CORRECT BIRTH DATE AND ANCESTOR NAME TO SECURE CORRECT DOCUMENT AND TREE MATCHES - changing dates compromises the profile and matches to be fair to the descendants of this ancestor)

Someone is/has been adding inaccurate information to this line. Please be more careful and caring about our ancestors. Thank you.

—-

Specifically, the “display name” (not the birth name or surname fields) is an identification based on what he called himself in his Will, which is an attached source, as well as summarized in the “about.”

Members on Geni use toponyms like this to distinguish and disambiguate profiles who are easily confused - as the John Lee surely is. Members also have an option to “not” see display names in their account settings.

Geni matching algorithms, at this point, don’t use display name at all; the matches are on name fields, dates, and relationships.

If additional view settings are needed, we can create Geni enhancement requests.

I’m also going to clean up the biography so it’s formatted more like I do master profiles.

Also removing this comment.

“Statements below are unverified and have no resource to explain why the disconnection from parents Thomas and Ann as there is no reasoning as to why this is being done and incorrect data imposed.”

Again, we use discussion for “disputed origins.” Hopefully can we can summarize the results in the profile - but this discussion was “specifically” started that purpose.

I’m also going to copy out to this discussion the notes from other websites, and add the references in a reference list.

Biography
John James Lee was born on 11 Oct 1705 in Charles City County, Virginia.[1][2]

He was married about 1729 in Goochland County, Virginia to Lucy Seaton Braxton.[3] They were the parents of the following children:

John James Lee Jr., born about 1729, died 19 Jun 1779; married Elizabeth "Betsey" "Betty" Page
Helena Eleanor Lee, born Apr 1730, died 23 Jul 1771; married Jarvis Jackson
Stephen Lee, born 3 Dec 1731, died Dec 1809; married Ann Poore
Deborah Lee, born 1736, died 23 Feb 1803; married John Hamilton Hodges
Benjamin Lee, born 1739, died 1803; married Mary Richardson
In 1730 he lived in Northampton, Lancaster County, Virginia. By 1731, he had moved to Goochland County, Virginia, where he owned land.[4]

He made his last Will on 15 Aug 1770.

He passed away on 10 Oct 1770[1] in Johnston County, North Carolina. [5][6][7]

On 18 Mar 1771 his estate was in the probate court of Goochland County, Virginia. [8]

The Will book says the Will was witnessed by the "mark" of Joseph Page, but the court record says it was signed by James Page. These were no doubt the sons of Axelheath Page - their sister Betsey had married John Lee, Jr.

WFT tree 2022, CD 12, shows his parents as Thomas and Ann Lee, and traces his Lee ancestry earlier than 1530 in Shropshire, England.

However, correspondence on 15 Apr 1999 from Lois Werline, of Kansas City, MO, shows his line as John (William, William, Richard Henry Lee) where Richard Henry Lee is the father of the Sir Richard Lee who married Letitia Corbin and who was the predecessor of the line of Gen. Robert E. Lee. (possible mother's Lee line).

It is not clear whether or not he ever lived in North Carolina. It is logical to assume he planned a trip to North Carolina, and made his will before leaving, a common practice when a journey was intended. His family seems to have continued living in Goochland County, Virginia.

And these comments also.

* https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/141513688/john-james-lee On find a grave it shows John James Lee was the son of Thomas Lee (1679-1735) who was the son of Charles Lee and Elizabeth Medstand. Charles Lee was the son of Richard Lee and Anne Constable. Anne Constable was the daughter of Francis Constable and Alice Agnes Owen. (Curator had this recently changed - see discussion: https://www.geni.com/discussions/233728 and had parents detatched without explaination)

STATEMENT: “DNA proves John Lee is NOT related to Thomas Lee” per what evidence as newly recent DNA data has confirmed MRCA matches from direct descendants using Y-DNA, Autosomal and MIT DNA - linear. per provide exact evidence of the contrary.

The earliest confirmed ancestors in the Lee family tree are John and Lucy Lee who settled on Fleming’ Park Creek in Goochland County, VA about 1728. John was born ca 1705 in Virginia. At this time we do not have information on Lucy’s maiden name or family history.

Started a section in the profile for John Lee, of Goochland County

Disputed Origins

Seen as a son of Thomas Lee (1679 - 1735), son of Charles Lee & Elizabeth Medstand. This Thomas Lee, of Lancaster County, Virginia, wrote his will in 1733, and his children were all minors.

Extracted from https://colonial-settlers-md-va.us/getperson.php?personID=I27686&tr... retrieved 4 June 2022:

  • Abstracts of Lancaster County, Virginia Wills 1653-1800; {Ida J. Lee}
  • LEE, Thomas. Division of estate. Rec. 12 Nov. 1742.
  • James Scrosby & Eliza. his wife, Exors. Estate divided between Elizabeth & her children Leanna, Elizabeth, Thomas, Richard, John, Charles, & Lucy Lee. W.B. 13, p. 303

The name of Thomas Lee's wife is not known. His children, all minors in 1733, were named in his will and in that of his second son, Thomas in 1758, with these exceptions: William, the eldest, and Richard, the third sons, are omitted, and a daughter, Elizabeth, is added; she must have been born after the making of her father's will.

——

The John Lee mentioned in Will was born about 1725. See https://colonial-settlers-md-va.us/getperson.php?personID=I73467&tr...

There is no such place as "Northampton" in Lancaster County, Virginia. This appears to result from confusion between Northampton *County* (on the Eastern Shore), which has had little to do with the Lees Of Virginia other than Hancock Lee (he found his first wife there when he was appointed Justice in the 1670s-80s) and Lancaster County, on the Northern Neck (western shore, mainside).

There have been other isolated Lees appearing on the Eastern Shore from time to time, notably Thomas Lee (1600-1638, very little known about him) and Francis Lee (c. 1660-before 16 June 1691), thought to have been London-born, married Annabell Toft (natural daughter of Ann Toft and Col. Edmund Scarburgh - yes you read that right) and had, as far as is known, only one daughter, Rebecca, who married Kendall Towles.

The Mile Files are fairly reliable regarding matters in Northampton and Accomack Counties, Virginia, but less so on the upper Eastern Shore and hit-or-miss on mainside Virginia and Maryland.,

And for the record, there have been *no* knighthoods even in the Lees Of Virginia (or any other American Lee family), at any time, for any reason. Any such statement is just ridiculous puffery by some person or persons of abysmal ignorance. Knighthoods are a strictly *European* thing.

This is a nice reference, thank you.

What I’m curious about is the sisters mentioned in the Will extract. Surely that’s an origin clue?

6/4/2022 at 6:25 PM

OK, Jacqueli Charlene Finley I think I’ve addressed most of the points, and I’ll describe the ones I’m not addressing.

1. There’s no need to list out MyHeritage tree details unless there’s a different point made that’s not mentioned or incorporated in the Master Profile. This is because they’re stuck to the profile as SmartMatches, so it’s redundancy after redundancy until I’m dizzy. :)

2. I did add external site trees as references, with a comment next to it on their parents listed.

3. But I think the main problem might be because the links to https://colonial-settlers-md-va.us/getperson.php?personID=I27686&tr... didn’t work for you. Probably truncated. So I aliased it for easier clicking.

4. I’m not going to discuss DNA test results except as it’s uploaded to Geni, or FamilyTree DNA Y DNA projects I can see - except my own family, O guess! The “DNA doesn’t match” comment came from a FamilySearch tree member, so it’s that person you may want to work with.

5. But again, I think you’ll see the origin difficulty once you examine Thomas Lee’s estate. His son John was a minor at that time, which conflicts with the birth date - and locations seen - for the John Lee.

Hope this helps.

If I’m understanding the “research note” on Wikitree correctly:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Lee-3391

in 1999 a Lois Werline proposed this John Lee was a son of William, son of William of Col. Richard “the scholar” Lee, II

Who didn’t have a son William, so …

6/4/2022 at 9:16 PM

I’m thinking that doesn’t even rise to deserving a whole section. I’m just going to annotate the reference on the Wikitree list.

Here’s another resource describing the family of Thomas Lee (d 1735).

Oh boy.

This John Lee, of Little River does not look like John Lee, of Lancaster County to me.

John (3rd son of Thomas) was living in 1759 when he’s named in his brother Thomas Lee Jr’s Will.

He was left property by his father: “ … Item, I give and bequeath unto son John all that tract of Land on ye head of Corrotoman River which I had by my wife where Harvey now lives to him and the heirs of his body Lawfully begotten for ever Provided the Child my wife goes with be not a boy which if it be then my will is that the sd. Land be Equally Divided between them and the heirs of their Bodys Lawfully begotten for ever. …”

But, notes for Thomas Lee are that “in 1751 he moved to Rocky Creek, Chester County, South Carolina on the waters of Wateree River …”

And, he married in Maryland (probably 2nd marriage) in 1746.

Which means he’s probably not the father of Thomas Lee, of Ditchley

If anyone can identify parents of these people better, please speak up.

6/4/2022 at 10:14 PM

Correction:

But, notes for Thomas Lee are that “in 1751 he moved to Rocky Creek, Chester County, South Carolina on the waters of Wateree River …”

Should be John Lee, not Thomas.

For once Familysearch.org comes through with an actual primary record: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS3L-Z9RX-X?i=448&...

Note: This is the parish register for St. John's Parish, Joppa, Harford County, Maryland. Joppa is northeast of Baltimore on the west side of the Chesapeake Bay.

Who exactly this "John Lee: and "Margaret Howard" were, I am not certain - she is probably not an Anne Arundel Howard. But there were Howards outside Anne Arundel County, and Lees everywhere. (Wikitree wants her to be the daughter of Gideon Howard and either Hannah Greniffe (first wife) or Lydia Holland (second wife); but Newman has no record of Gideon's daughter Margaret marrying anybody, and "Early Colonial Settlers" has her only in the Notes.

Thank you, you’re ahead of me on her. I was still trying to figure out what a “Catholic Presbyterian” is. :). They had a good church historian, though, and preserved John Lee, of Little River records:

The Revolutionary Soldiers of Catholic Presbyterian Church Chester County, South Carolina”. Pages 79-82

Gedcom upload in progress--- 1500's profile. How did this slip through? whatever the reason, I found myself here again today: John Lee, Esq.

Not just a Gedcom upload, one with Bad Information at the top (so far). It will probably get worse if it is allowed to continue.

Some people absolutely *cannot* get it through their heads that it is entirely possible - was actually more the rule than the exception - to be armigerous *without* being knighted.

These people do not understand that *knighthood is not hereditary*.

(Baronetcies, yes, but not simple knighthood - and baronets were a dodge invented by James I as a way of bringing in money to the Royal coffers.)
