Hi.
One of my ancestors was: Mordechai Tzvi Jaffe

His son was born in 1839 in Linkuva, Šiaulių apskr., Lithuania, Russian Empire
(His son changed his last name to Shapira)
According to a DNA test performed by one of his direct descendants on the paternal line, it turns out that he belongs to: J-L816.
I suspect that maybe because of the name: Mordechai Tzvi Jaffe, maybe he is a direct descendant of Rabbi Mordechai Yaffe BAAL HALEVUSH
Does anyone know Rabbi Mordechai Yaffe BAAL HALEVUSH's HAPLOGROUP so I can check it out?
Thank you
SIMCHA BOHRER

Dr. simcha gershon bohrer
I think there is a list of descendants of BAAL HALEVUSH((At least a partial list)

There is a group of rabbinical genealogy on Facebook, you can ask there

As far as I know, the BAAL HALEVUSH descendants that were tested their Y chromosome DNA were found belong to the haplogroup E-V13.
Two kits of these descendants from the Jaffe family surname project are:
152547
124366

My grandfather is his descendant, I guess I know through whom, but I still miss quite a few generations. Is there a list of his descendants?

By the way, through my grandmother he is my big cousin (2), and my great-grandmother's first husband was his descendant. In both of these cases, I know how the connection to him

Dr. simcha gershon bohrer Thanks for the inquiry. Here is some information to help with the research: 1) L816 is associated with R' Tzvi Elimelech Spira of Dynov keep in mind that L816 alone is not specific enough to compare to the R' Tzvi lineage, which has been tested in more detail to the J-FGC65704 level; you would need to do further testing to confirm a match to R' Tzvi's lineage, 2) there are currently three Jaffe haplogroups to my knowledge: a) one is in the J1a-Z640 branch, b) another is in the J2a-M410 branch, and c) another one mentioned by Private User is in the E-V13 branch. Both (a) and (b) have been tied via family trees to Baal Halevush, so which one is still uncertain. I have no family tree information regarding the E-V13 persons.

The ydna sample you tested (L816) cannot be part of these two known Jaffe branches (Z640 and M410), and therefore appears not to be connected to Baal Halevush, but could still be part of another Jaffe branch. The use of Jaffe as a name may be connected to various haplogroups, just as Margolis, Shapiro, etc. have several haplogroups. There is no one exclusive Jaffe haplogroup.

PS: I see a note in my files that there is a Jaffe branch identified with L816 tree (who happens to be kit 50795 in the project mentioned above by Leon Kull) : Judah Halevi Ioffe As with the R' Tzvi situation above, this L816 sample would need to do advanced testing to answer the question.

Ok.
Thank you so much everyone!
I understand that it is not yet known for sure what the LEVUSH industry is. But probably not the L816.
I will continue the rest of the correspondence in a private message.
Thank you

And another note from my experience:
Tests of a single SNP should be done in
https://www.yseq.net/
It only costs $ 18 per SNP
But before that one should think well and consult which SNP should be checked.

Another good thing about yseq.net is that if they don't yet have a particular SNP on their menu, you can special request for any SNP to be tested (also $18 plus $1 for the request).

First need to submit special request for any SNP to be tested (1USD)
After they send a message that the SNP you requested is already available, you can order it for $ 18

You don't need to pay $1 for the "special request". Just search for the SNP name on their site or send them a question by email.

...and you can ask me which SNP to test, it's free :)
