I was wondiring about how I can access the source information from the Geni API...

Am I correct when I think that will NOT get the information about related documents when I receive a Profile structure

https://www.geni.com/platform/developer/help/api?path=profile&version=1

Can I get (and update) this information through the Documents interface ?

https://www.geni.com/platform/developer/help/api?path=profile%2Fdocuments&version=1

And will this include the record-matches and smart-matches connected to each profile?

Since I can actually get info about all other profile information (including photos) from the Profile structure, I was thinking that I should be able to get a list of document-xrefs as well from the Profile interface?

If I need to call the documents interface explicitly I will do so. I just want to make sure first.

First, I'm sorry about my spelling in the above post.... :-(

I did make a quick test on one of my profiles, this one:

Olof Bergelsson

where I can access the profile info using this URL

https://www.geni.com/api/profile-g6000000004389888100/

which works nicely. The profile does include both record-matches and smart matches, so I tried accessing the following URL:

https://www.geni.com/api/profile-g6000000004389888100/documents

but unfortunately it returns an empty list

{"results":[]}

So how do I access the record-matches from the API ?

Is there a way do do so?

Currently I prefer to document sources using text in the About-field of profiles instead of using the documents interface.

As long as record-matches are not part of the documents I will definitely continue to do so.

I know that you previously raised this point on this thread in 2018https://www.geni.com/platform/developer/forum/topic?topic_id=105 and as far as I know in the intervening 4 years you have never received a response from Geni.

I too would be very interested in at least being able to extract the link to the matches source and some other information via API for a Geni profile - I have a feeling I started or joined a discussion on this on another thread that I cant find right now that similarly went nowhere.

We should count ourselves lucky that there even is an API for Geni. While the same company also own MyHeritage I was not able to ever get anyone from MyHeritage to respond on the subject of the MyHeritage API which I know did exist at one point.

https://www.familygraph.com/overview

but for which it is apparently impossible to get an access key with no-one responding to requests logged via this link https://www.familygraph.com/getAccess in spite of being proudly heralded in 2011 at:

https://blog.myheritage.com/2011/09/new-myheritage-com-family-graph...

I cant see any commentary on it being discontinued anywhere.

Unfortunately the parent company of both Geni and MyHeritage seems more interested in taking money than developing either product.

This is further evident from the promised synergies between Geni and MyHeritage trumpeted on the MyHeritage website which have never eventuated.

For example:

From the blog publication of 2012 at https://blog.myheritage.com/2012/11/myheritage-acquires-geni-com/

How will the two websites operate?
We will keep the two websites separate and will not move users from one site into the other. MyHeritage will remain a forest of independent private family trees, and Geni.com will remain focused on building a single family tree of the world. Over time (it may take a few years), we will be looking to create more value for the users of the two websites, and will consider building a bridge between them to allow users who wish this to have a tree on both MyHeritage and Geni.com to enjoy the best of both worlds, and have changes made in their tree on one site reflected automatically in the other.

How does this affect Geni.com?
We will continue to operate Geni.com as a separate website based out of Los Angeles and it will maintain the name of Geni.com. We intend to continue to develop Geni.com’s vision for the World Family Tree, and put more resources behind it to help it realize it’s potential. Many benefits are coming to the users of Geni.com thanks to the technologies and expertise of MyHeritage.com.

Good to hear that someone noticed my previous forum thread and that others also request this function.

I do love Geni.com, and the world tree, and do not want to complain too much since it is my favorite genealogy site!

I do keep all my research here, but since I do that, it is a pity that I can not backup parts of the work that I do (for example accepted record matches and smart matches).

I'm a bit afraid that the owners may want to put all resources in the myheritage site, and too little in geni.com, but hope I am wrong.

Did you look at the activity download (https://www.geni.com/account_settings/download_activity)?
I've used that in the past to get some info that was hard to extract in other ways.
I was a few years ago, so I do not remember exactly what info is available, so it could be there is no useful info in it for you.

Ahh, this is news to me! I've started creating it, and I'll see what kind of info it contains!

Thanks Job Waterreus !

Job Waterreus I tried it now, but it gave inform, ation on a more basic level, such as the list of created profiles and so on. No edit details such as record matches etc.

Sorry, I hoped there would be some info on confirmed matches.

Always good to check! :-)
