His ancestry is uncertain, but he was named in the 1671 will of [[Dea. Nicholas Phillips, of Weymouth Dea. Nicholas Phillips, of Weymouth] Nicholas Phillips, of Weymouth], who is thought to have come from Wendover (Buckingham). There is reason to believe they were brothers of [[Martin Phillips Martin Phillips] Martin Phillips]. Richard Ripley, who information is often unreliable thought he was born 19 Mar 1619/1620 in East Grinstead (Sussex), son of [[John Phillips John Phillips] John Phillips] and [[Joan Mary Phillips (No Name)] Joan Mary Dyer].

His parents and origins are unknown. Although unsourced suggestions include John Phillips and Mary Ruth Gerrard; another has suggested a specific birth of 3 Feb 1614 in Dedham, Essex, son of Nicholas Phillips without source. Until proof of his origins is found, these origins have been removed.
