I was working on a Tate DNA match on Ancestry who has Robert Tate and Mary Doak in his lineage. I found duplicates for Robert and Mary here on Geni, but when I merged them, Robert ended up with two sets of parents.

So i had to Google to try to find evidence of his correct parents. I found:

1. This site shows that Mary Doak married John Tate, not Robert but then in the notes states that John was more likely her brother-inlaw:

http://cwcfamily.org/doak.htm

Doak family lore, however, likes to add the following siblings, although not all are added by all the family lore-mongers:

Ann (m George Breckinridge)
Elizabeth Thankful (m John Finley)
Julia (seems to have been unmarriageable)
Nathaniel (no-one seems able to marry him either)
Mary (m John Tate)
Robert (m Hannah Breckinridge)
Virginia Mayhem Doak - my own contribution, this one ... floruit 1740 and far from dead yet ;-)
William (very much a rara avis - so almost certainly a mythical beast)
Of these, Elizabeth Thankful Finley is pretty much a certainty and it seems more likely than not that John Tate was her brother-in-law.

2. But then this site also shows her married to John Tate, not Robert:

TATE-DOAK.
(From Boone F'wmil!JJ Hist-ory, by Dr. R. N. Mayfield.)
John Tate, who migrated from Pennsylvani,a to Virginia in
1743, manied MARY DOAK and was one of t,he founders of Augusta
county, Virginia. He owned a farm and mill. He died in 1801.

3. This site also has her husband as John Tate, not Robert:

FIRST GENERATION

(1) James1 DOAK was born about 1670 at Ulster, Ireland, and married (2) ELIZABETH who was born about 1674 at Ulster(?), Ireland.

Hi!
As you were kind enough to give me a little infomation on Samuel Doak, III and his family, I thought I'd pass along what little I have on the rest of the family. One thing that I am needing verified is the marriage of Isabella DOAK to John MILLIGAN I. What few records I have say that they were married September 28, 1786 in Augusta County, VA, but there are no copies of anything to back this up. Several people in the family have disputed the fact that Isabella DOAK was married to John MILLIGAN I. If the Library of Virginia is going to be closed for several months to outside requests, where does one send for information of this sort?

Ok, here goes:

https://joepayne.org/doak.htm

1. Samuel DOAK I, born in 1690, buried in Antim Co., Ireland, province of Ulster, m. _______. They had 9 children (all born in Ireland):
2. Samuel DOAK II, b. 1716 in Ireland, d. May 19, 1772, m. 1736 to Jane Mitchell aboard ship to America.
3. John DOAK, b. 1712, m. Mary Wilson
4. Nathaniel DOAK, b. 1713
5. Robert DOAK, b. 1714, d. September 24, 1796, m. __ to Hannah Breckenridge
6. David DOAK, b. 1715, d. October 2, 1787, m. ___ to Mary ________
7. Thankful DOAK, m. John Finley
8. Julia DOAK (no info)
9. Ann DOAK, b. ___, d. March 1747 or 1748, m. 1742 to George Breckenridge

None of these sites list her husband as John Robert Tate or Robert John Tate, which seems to be how some folks resolve the issue of John v. Robert as her husband.

This site does have her husband as Robert, son of Robert Tate and Anne Waddy:

https://gw.geneanet.org/tdowling?lang=en&pz=timothy+michael&amp...

This Wiki page has Robert John Tate married to Mary Doak and has yet a totally different set of paernts for him than either of the two from his duplicate Geni profiles:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Tate-554

Shows his parents as John Tate and Sarah Beatty

I also came across an older discussion about who Mary Doak was married to:

https://www.geni.com/discussions/203926

So, I'm left at this point uncertain what the true name of her husband was - John, Robert, John Robert or Robert John, much less who her husband's parents were. None of the sites I found that show her husband's name show who his parents were supposed to be except the Wiki page that throws in a third couple from those listed here on Geni.

I'm 'fairly sure' I'm related to the DNA match on the Tate lines, but bit off more than I expected when I merged the duplicate for Mary Doak and her Tate husband, so I still don't know what the correct connections are.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.
