At the top of the tree, the Robert Wilkinson entry sounds ok, and his parents may well have been Thomas and Mary. However, the only Duchess of York named Mary lived 200 years later; I have also seen that in some of the family web trees Thomas Wilkinson is called Duke of York; no Wilkinson was ever Duke of York. No Mary in the Plantagenet line has those dates; none married a Wilkinson.

At some point, somebody either made a hopeful jump, or misread something, and now that is all across the web in family trees, but always either unsourced or giving other web trees as sources.

Private User -- I see the screen shot of the message on Ancestry that you've attached to Mary, the wife of Thomas Wilkinson. It's supposition, of course; but I see that there is an assumption that Mary is indeed called a Plantagenet. There aren't any sources for this, however -- at this time the records that churches would later keep, of births and weddings and burials, were not kept. So one would be looking for other documents that showed that she used that last name.

If you find references to any of those, please let us know! Many thanks.

Thanks for the response. I think the "Duchess of York" thing was done by someone who conflated the two Mary Plantagenets. I've also seen "Mary / Margaret Plantagenet". so I think someone saw "Margaret of York, *Duchess* of Burgundy" and say a "Mary, Duchess of York", added the Duchess part and ran with it. If you don't see Mary in the context of all her supposed siblings (and most trees do not include them) it would be very easy to make this mistake. Of particular note which again, is only speculative, is that there is an "Ursula Wilkinson" a few generations later. Ursala is not a terribly common name and there *was* a legitimate Ursala Plantagenet so that's interesting.
