Eberhard I, Graf im Zürichgau

Good point
I wonder about the wife Gisela

The problem with Eberhard I, Graf im Zürichgau is that he was married to Gisela

A. Burkhard I in the Zürichgau (* around 915/20, † around 968)

A.1 Manegold I in the Zürichgau (* around 940/50, † 991)
A.2 Eberhard IV. in Zürichgau (* around 940, † 995) ⚭ Gisela

A.2.1 Gebhart von Nellenburg (* around 950)

A.3 Gottfried II. in Zürichgau (* 940, † November 12, 995)

And medlands' version:

1. EBERHARD [I] (-after 27 Jun 889). Graf im Zürichgau. The dating clause of a charter dated 27 Jun 889, under which “Perehtelo...” donated property to abbey, notes “sub dominatione Eberharti comitis et advocati sui Adalberti”[609]. same person as...? ---. m GISELA, daughter of --- (-after 911). The Annales Alamannicorum record that "Gisle…socrui Purchardi iunioris" donated all her property to St Peter's in 911[610]. One child:

a) REGINLIND ([885/90]-Insel Ufenau 958 after 29 Apr). Reginlind's mother´s identity is confirmed by the reference noted above, but direct proof that Graf Eberhard [I] was her father has not yet been found. Regino records that "viduam Burchardi" married "Herimanno"[611]. The Liber Anniversariorum of Einsiedeln records in Aug the donation of "Stevegeia, Kaltbrunnen et Lindowa" by "domina Regelinda cum filio suo Burcardo duce"[612]. "Otto…rex" granted property "in pago Zuriggaui in comitatu Liudonis commitis" to "Erig" at the request of "Regilinde…comitisse" by charter dated 10 Mar 952[613]. "Otto…rex" donated property "in pago Engrisgouue in comitatu Uualtbrahtti in loco…Uuidhergis" to "matrone fidelique nostre Reginlind" at the request of "Burghardi ducis" by charter dated 29 Apr 958[614]. m firstly (before 911) BURKHARD [II], son of BURKHARD [I] Marchio in Rätien [Duke of Swabia] & his wife --- (-murdered Novara 28/29 Apr 926). He was installed as BURKHARD II Duke of Swabia in 917. m secondly HERMANN I Duke of Swabia, son of GEBHARD Graf im oberen Rheingau [Konradiner] & his wife Hidda --- (-10 Dec 949, bur Reichenau Island).

This is a really tough problem, I remember spending weeks trying to figure out these lines with little luck.

It looks like Geni is following a more or less traditional theory (with which there are variations), along these lines:

Whereas, in 2021 Jeannette Rothlisberger produced a pedigree chart showing Regelinde as the daughter of our Gisele's brother Eberhard. In other words as Gisele's niece, not her daughter.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/21/Stammbaum-Regin...

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Stammbaum-Reginlinde.jpg

The alternative theory also has Gisela and brothers, Berengar and Eberhard as children of Unruoch, so of that dynasty rather than from what would have been her aunt Judith.

(Geni's parentage for Gisela is on a completely different path with Walthred of Verona and Gisela of Friulli, based on what I'm not sure).

I don't know anything about Ms. Rothlisberger's credentials, although she's obviously interested in Regelinde's ancestry

This Wikipedia artical on Ermentrude of France suggests that she married Gisela's brother, Everhard son of Unruoch, in line with Ms. Rothlisberger's theory. Several German sources are cited in the article about Unruoch's son, Eberhard.

I think the key to this puzzle may be found within the rather obscure (almost all in German language and/or Latin) histories of Swabia. I tried before to read some of it, and found the texts rich with factual information. But unfortunately my German language skill is very weak, making it difficult to form a complete mental picture.

The more traditional version of the pedigree showing Regelinde, apparently came from: NEUJAHRSBLATT [New Year's Leaflet] of the Fraumünster Society for the year 2020 - page 19.

https://stammler-genealogie.ch/showmedia.php?mediaID=10116

Fraumunster is a Swiss church in Zurich. Jeannett Rothlisberger is associated with both of the above variations of the pedigree (the 2021 version being the latest), and with the Fraumunster Society. So her charts were first published in their 'leaflet' or newsletter.

She is also cited in Stammler Genealogie on the page for Regelinde's mother Gisela, whose parents are not listed but who is identified as an Unruochingerin.

So of course none of this is conclusive, it only proves how little anyone really knows about it.

Thanks for all that research. Geni's best bet is to only add profiles with primary sources - thus avoiding clashing speculations on the same tree :-/

https://stammler-genealogie.ch/showmedia.php?mediaID=10116 has gisela marrying her brother, unless I'm losing my mind :-)

Apparently Gisela had a brother besides Berengar, whose name was the same (Eberhard) as that of her husband. They should be differentiated by their respective parentage and titles, along with the actual history involved (locations and activities of the subjects, etc.); which ought to be reasonably simple and straighforward, but obviously isn't in this case.

With the primary sources nearly all to be found in German and Latin, someone fluent in those languages would be best suited for the task.

About her 'marrying her brother', yeah, I wondered about that too. That seems to be the biggest issue with the more traditional, older theory.

I tend to agree with Ms. Rothlisberger's 2021 version of the chart. It looks like she has really been studying the problem, and is onto something. But even she is having trouble putting together a convincing argument with full documentation.

So imagine how I must feel, lol.

Thank you
